Salmo, B.C.

Admittedly, Salmo was not a divisional town. But it is one of the West’s best preserved examples of a railway town. Along with the rare Great Northern Railway station, built in 1923, sitting at the end of the main street, the town’s central artery also features a stunning collection of heritage shops and structures. The streetscape is like a museum piece. Sitting prominently on the corner across from the station is the historic Salmo Hotel, and a string of buildings beside it, including the drug store and liquor store, displaying the Old West boomtown style of storefront, as does the row of wooden stores opposite. Although the trains no longer stop here, the appearance of the village core has changed little since the last train rumbled by the white wooden station on a railway roadbed that is now minus its ties and rails.
