IN WINTER, the alpine terrain surrounding Rohr Lake and Marriott Meadows in the Cayoosh Range offers excellent ski touring. These glacier-carved valleys, north of Joffre Lakes (Hike 48), are also spectacular for summer hiking and scrambling.
From the avalanche-terrain warning sign at the top of Cayoosh Creek Forest Service Road, head northeast under cover of forest, spotting salmonberries and crossing several creeks. Reach a major junction in 20 minutes (50°24′37″ N, 122°27′30″ W). Left is signed for “Aspen,” but take the right fork for Rohr Lake.
The steep trail switchbacks east through blueberries to a lovely subalpine bowl filled with fluffy white Chamisso’s cottongrass. Follow the muddy path up the right side of a boulder field. Listen for the whistling of an American pika. Traverse left at a waterfall and ascend to the shore of beautiful blue Rohr Lake (50°24′35″ N, 122°26′54″ W), 1.5 hours from the trailhead.
Mount Rohr lies 2.5 hours beyond the lake, requires solid route-finding skills, and should be left to experienced parties. From the lakeshore, follow meadow paths and cairns up-valley, passing to the left of tarns and picking your way through boulders. At the head of the valley, ascend slopes of talus and fireweed east toward your objective. Stay away from cornices.
