ACADIAN PENINSULA

Bartibog Bridge

It’s a 20-minute drive on Highway 11 from Miramichi to this bayside town, where MacDonald Farm Historic Site (600 Hwy. 11, 506/778-6085; late June–early Sept. daily 9:30 A.M.–4:30 P.M.; adult $3, senior $2, child $1.50) re-creates a Scottish settler’s life in 1784. Guides take visitors through the two-story stone farmhouse, fields, orchards, and outbuildings.

Val-Comeau Provincial Park

Farther north on Highway 11, Val-Comeau Provincial Park comprises lush sphagnum bogs, formed when the last ice sheet melted and pooled without a place to drain on the flat terrain. Seabirds inhabit the nutrient-rich marshes; the park is known for bird-watching, and there is an observation tower for good views. Val-Comeau also offers a campground (506/393-7150; June–mid-Sept.; $25–32), with 55 sites, swimming areas, and a playground.
