If you visit the Frankfurt area during a big trade fair, staying in Darmstadt will save you money; local prices rise only moderately during fairs and train travel to Frankfurt’s Hauptbahnhof can take as little as 20 minutes. Book early, though, as rooms fill up fast.

Best Western Hotel DARMSTADT HOTEL €€

Situated two blocks southwest of Luisenplatz – very central.

Hotel Prinz Heinrich HOTEL €

Singles are small but serviceable. Breakfast costs €9. Located in a slightly forlorn area midway between the Hauptbahnhof and Luisenplatz.

DJH Hostel HOSTEL €

(452 93; www.darmstadt.jugendherberge.de; Land-graf-Georg-Strasse 119; dm/s €24.90/34.90; ) This 130-bed hostel is on the shores of the Grosser Woog, 1km west of Luisenplatz and four blocks south of Matildenhöhe. From the city centre take bus L to the ‘Woog’ stop.
