Chapter 19
Steve jogs in the forest beside Nari, his muscles burning from the trip up the stairs, his breath catching in clouds. âRefugees of what?â he pants.
âRefugees of Ragnarok,â Nari says.
Storing the mysterious implications of that for later, Steve taps the radio in his ear. âTeam at Mission Control, report,â he says, referring to the drafty shack Heiðr lodged them in.
Hardingâs voice crackles back. âAll quiet here. Park is with me.â
They still have gear at Mission Control; Steve canât let them leave it unattended.
âBeatrice is at the inn,â Nari pants beside him.
âBeatrice,â Steve says, âWhatâs going on?â
Jogging beside him, Bohdi says, âIs it because I broke the guyâs arm?â
Beatriceâs voice snaps back over the radio. âNo, it wasnât that. Itâs the baby.â
âThe baby?â Larson asks.
âWhatâs the situation, are they armed?â Stave asks.
Beatriceâs voice buzzes in his ear. âOnly with torches and rocks, a few pitchforks and shovels.â
And then Thomasâs voice cracks on the line, fury transparent despite the static. âThey tried to stone Bjorna and Cannonball!â
Steve stops in his tracks just before the team draws onto the main thoroughfare. He nods for Berry to check around the corner. The grizzled warrior has a mirror mounted on his rifle. He tilts it around the building. Eyes on it, voice steady, Berry says, âWeâve got more problems.â
Lewisâs voice buzzes in Steveâs ear. âWhat was Cannonball doing outside?â Steveâs skin heats despite the cold. If Amyâs voice is in his ear, she canât be safely tucked below ground; if she isnât safely below ground, then Claire â¦
Berry interrupts his thoughts. âHeiðr and five Frost Giant hunters, armed with crossbows and axes, coming this way.â
âLewis, donât come closer,â Steve says.
Lewisâs voice buzzes again. âI need Bohdi and anyone else you can spare. I can clear the mob without violence!â
Steve doesnât have time to ask how. Tilting the mirror, Berry narrows his eyes. âComing closer â¦â
Heiðr and five armed hunters ⦠Steve looks to the forest they just emerged from. He hears no bird calls, and Harding and Thomas have not been attacked. âHeiðr wants to talk,â Steve says. Loud enough to be heard around the corner, Steve shouts, âLower your rifles!â
And then he turns to Bohdi. Steve doesnât know what Lewis has planned, but considering how bad this situation is getting, maybe Chaos is just what she needs to make it work. âGet to Lewis. Redman, you and Valli, too.â He isnât surprised to see that the kid has already started backing back toward the trees. At Steveâs words, he spins and sprints in the direction they just came. Redman and Valli take off without a word, but Larson shoots Steve a glare.
âFollow my lead,â Steve says. With that, he walks around the corner of the shanty and walks out to meet their hosts. Heiðr is at the front and center of the group. At her hip she wears an old-fashioned silver pistol. He hears the footsteps of his team behind him but doesnât look. The hairs on the back of his neck prickle. He doesnât need to look.
