FORTY

SAMMY

If there were listening devices in the basement clinic, Sammy and Eduardo would not be able to escape. Yet common sense told Sammy that the kidnappers upstairs would not have asked Macario to set the abductees up. They could kill the two men anytime, anywhere. The Cubans only needed him for the mules, so why was he still alive? As for Eduardo, they needed his skills. At least until Macario recovered.

“You said you had one condition to help us escape.” Sammy decided it was worth the risk to inquire. “What is it?”

“Freedom. I want my freedom.”

Sammy snorted and asked if they had to carry him out.

“Freedom from what?” Eduardo asked.

“From everything and from that comemierda. That shit eater.”

“Who’s that?”

“Bembe. Es un comemierda.”

Eduardo touched the man’s forehead even though he had only recently taken his temperature. “Are you hallucinating?”

Before Macario could respond, Sammy asked him if it was the morphine talking.

“I’m very conscious of what I’m telling you. If you two promise to come back for me, I’ll tell you how to get out of here.”

“Tell us your plan,” Eduardo said in a much softer approach than Sammy had taken.

“First, we wait until the men leave for work. That should be soon,” Macario said, stretching his neck and glancing at Eduardo. “You’ll need to save that woman of yours. Bembe sent four men to hunt her down. To get her and her brother’s family too.”

Eduardo’s hands trembled. He rubbed them against his pants to hide it, like any good spy would, but Sammy had noticed. Sammy was not yet certain if Eduardo was a CIA operative or not. Or could it be that Nikki worked for the Agency? Andy had told him Nikki was a private investigator, but was that a cover for her true employment?

“How…” Eduardo sputtered. He looked genuinely terrified. “How do they know about her?”

“From your telephone. And from documents in the pickup’s glove compartment. The pickup you were traveling in with that other man, the one who was killed in the park. They got an address from a rental agreement. They were going to check that out.”

“Tell me about the work they do.” Sammy was testing the man’s honesty.

Macario sighed. “They’ll set up those new communication units that I saw you photograph when the three of us were alone in the helicopter.”

“You fooled me,” Eduardo said. “I thought you slept through that.”

Macario chuckled. “I’m well trained.”

“How do we get out of here?” Sammy asked.

“First, there’s a tunnel Bembe had us build in case of emergency. It takes you out to a small shed. The entrance and the exit are well hidden. If they suspect I helped you, it’s my death sentence.”

“I can tape your mouth down and tie your legs to the bed,” Eduardo said, “if you think that will convince them you were not our accomplice.”

Macario held his good hand up and told the doctor that would not be necessary.

“Tell us where that tunnel is,” Sammy said more forcefully, yet still speaking softly.

“Promise you’ll come back for me,” the patient said.
