Carrie

When Javier texts me asking to meet him for lunch I don’t hesitate to accept. We agree to meet at a sushi place just five minutes away from me.

Once again, he’s already waiting for me. His kiss on my cheek is light as he gets up and holds out my chair for me. “You are looking beautiful as always. A little tired, and clearly marked. Interesting, Rafael once commented a man marking a woman was an infantile thing to do.”

I’m proud of myself for not blushing. “I did wonder and I had to field questions from the twins this morning I would rather have not answered but...” I shrug. “I don’t know, considering how hard he fought not get involved I’m happy he wants people to know. It makes feel like less of a dirty secret or something.”

Javier smiles. “Oh yeah, you are not a secret. He’s already made it clear to Lindsey and human resources if something comes across with your name on it or you need him at all she’s to let him know immediately. Although he is being his usual tight-lipped self with me.” He sighs. “Rafael isn’t one to pour out his heart to anyone. So be warned. I’m doubtful he’s one for late-night heart to hearts and sharing.”

The waitress comes and we order, deciding to get a few different rolls to share together. “I kind of figured that out already. I’m going to take this at his pace and let him come around.”

He opens his mouth to respond but is stopped by his phone going off. “Hey, hermano, what’s up? I went to lunch because I thought you were in that conference call. You never want sushi so I’m taking advantage and am out with Carrie.”

I can’t hear Rafael’s side of the conversation but it doesn’t seem good because Javier frowns. “Rafe, chill out. It’s just lunch. I—”

He pulls his phone away to stare at it. “He hung up on me.” Shaking his head, he chuckles. “Rafe doesn’t do jealous. I’ve never seen him like this before.”

Guilt fills me. “I’m sorry. I’ll go. I don’t want you guys arguing, especially over me.”

“We aren’t going to argue. Sit, it’s fine. We’re going to finish our lunch. I find it funny. Like I said, you are bringing out something in Rafe I don’t think he even knew was there. This is a good thing. So tell me, how are things going with the twins?”

Just like that Javier shuts down my fears. Yet I can’t help but wonder what Rafael will be like tonight. If he will come tonight.

It doesn’t help my nerves that I don’t hear anything from Rafael all day. I’m pacing the living room when I get the text from Rafael at ten thirty on the dot that’s he’s here. Sighing in relief, I open door to him. He’s in a tight white shirt and jeans that look painted on and my stomach flips at the sight of him. Locking the door, I turn to find him already going down the hall to my room.
