Chapter 11

Carmen and I had a meeting scheduled to go over my promo the next week in Bristol.

“Can I ask you something?” I said when we were done with the business portion of our meeting.

“Does it have to do with Ryan? Because I don’t want to get in the middle.”

“What if it doesn’t have to do with Ryan and me?” I specified.

“Maybe. Let’s hear the question.”

“Do you know what this arrangement is she has with Burke? She says it’s consulting, but I don’t see any paperwork or anything like that. She doesn’t even stay with him during the races. I don’t get it, and she won’t tell me. It’s driving me crazy.”

“Sorry, I can’t help,” she said and looked away.

“You can’t help me because it would cross a line with the girl code or because you don’t know.”

“Because I don’t know. She hasn’t told me either. I told her she should just walk away and wipe her hands of everything that has to do with a race car.”

“Hey now!”

“I told her that before the two of you hooked up. Besides, I’m not sure how you are going to be for her in the long run.”

As far as helpful conversation, Carmen wasn’t the best.

“What’s that supposed to mean?” I asked defensively.

“Don’t get me wrong. I think you’re a nice guy, but aren’t all of you nice guys at first?”

“Not necessarily.”

“I know I’ve never seen Ryan happier than since she’s started seeing you, but you’re a player, Chase. She’s not prepared for you to give her the Let’s be friends line, or end up in someone else’s bed, and I have to say, I’m a little worried for her.”

“I’m not going to give her the Let’s be friends line, and I’m sure as hell not going to end up in someone else’s bed. I like her more than any girl I’ve ever been with. I just wish I knew what she was doing with Burke and why I can’t know about it. It has me worried. As her friend I assumed you would be worried as well, but maybe you’re not as good of a friend as I thought.”

She raised her brow at me, clearly not buying my crap.

“Okay.” I held up my hands in surrender. “I’m probably reading more into it. It’s just…why can’t she tell me? Doesn’t that seem odd?”

“I’ll see what I can find out.”

“Thanks, Carmen. You’re the best.”

“You keep saying that, but I don’t see any material forms of gratitude.”

“I’ll work on it.” We laughed. “I really do like her, Carmen. This is as serious as I’ve ever been about a girl. I don’t want to mess it up by being insecure. If you think I’m out of line, tell me.”

“I don’t know why you’re asking me. I’m so not good with this stuff. Do you see me in a relationship? No. I mess them up. Even with the nice guys.”

“Is there one nice guy in particular that you wish you wouldn’t have messed it up with?” I
