Quincy Jones wrote music for several movies that starred actor Sydney Poitier. Jones, Poitier, and comedian/actor Bill Cosby were key figures in breaking down prejudices and stereotypes of African Americans in Hollywood.

Jones wrote large orchestral backgrounds for some scenes, blues in others, and just percussion and bass in still others. Although the soundtrack was nominated for a Grammy Award in 1967, it did not win.

Jones mastered the art of writing music for movies and television. He has advice for would-be composers: "The movies are a fine workshop and a proving ground that you'll never come across working on records. Just the idea of dramatic scenes; they force you into musical situations that one might never get into otherwise."
