Chapter Eleven
Beatrice was amazed to find that she was able to drift to sleep that night. Although sheâd had Monaâs murder on her brain, perhaps the nighttime Pilates had relaxed her enough that she was able to fall right into a restorative sleep.
She woke to find that Wyatt had apparently gotten up quite a bit earlier. Heâd walked Noo-noo and made a big breakfast of eggs and waffles.
âGracious,â she said, rubbing her eyes and pulling her robe on as she joined Wyatt and a grinning Noo-noo in the kitchen. âI feel like Rip van Winkle, waking up from a long sleep. How long have you been up?â
âAbout an hour and a half. I knew you needed the rest. And Noo-noo and I had some together time.â
The little corgiâs grin grew wider. Beatrice suspected that Wyatt might also have slipped her a couple of dog treats. He knew she loved them.
âHave a seat, and Iâll bring you a plate.â
Soon Beatrice was at the table with a plate of steaming cheesy eggs and waffles in front of her. Wyatt gave her a big mug of coffee and a bottle of warmed syrup.
âI feel like itâs my birthday,â said Beatrice with a smile.
Wyatt sat down with her moments later, and they chatted about any number of things, none of them to do with murder, suspects, or dreadful discoveries in boutiques.
âWould you like to meet up with me for lunch today?â asked Wyatt. âIâm in meetings this morning and most of the afternoon, and a break in the middle of them would be great.â
âThat sounds perfect.â
Wyatt asked, âDo we want to walk there? Or should I pick you up and drive?â
âLetâs walk. Sometimes itâs tricky to find parking at lunchtime. And, from what Iâve heard recently about squabbles over parking spots, itâs just as well if we walk it. The weather should be beautiful, so that wonât be a problem.â
Wyatt said, âSounds good. If it looks like the weather is changing, weâll drive for Plan B.â
After Wyatt left, Beatrice did some housework and paid a few bills. Sheâd gotten into something of a rhythm with tidying the cottage. Tuesdays were her day to vacuum. Noo-noo gave her a wary look as if she was well aware it was Tuesday and the implications of that day. She wasnât at all fond of the vacuum and vacillated between chasing it unrepentantly to running away from it, room to room. Beatrice decided to give the little dog a break and put her out in the backyard. With the corgiâs big ears, she could definitely still hear the vacuum, but at least the monstrous thing would be out of sight.
After the housework was over, she decided to run downtown to get the Rosamunde Pilcher book from the library. She knew she was going to be in the area of the library with Wyatt at lunch, but wanted to get started reading before then. She thought that might be a nice way to finish out her morningâin the backyard with Noo-noo and a book.
