Chapter 15

One Night In Miami

The local bureau office in Miami refused to supply the needed pilots unless Tim agreed to close the dungeon portal that popped up on a beach nearby. Tim was not a fan of the intra-agency politics that agents had to maneuver when out of their assigned location, but he did his best to persevere. He barely managed to resist his urged to use his brother as a threat against the Special Agent in Charge, instead saying “that he would consider his request”. Tim hung up the call before his answer registered with the local SAC. The thought of the pompous agent fuming over his lack of agreement brought a smile to his face. Perhaps John and his attitude was beginning to rub off on him?

He was still grinning over the phone call when Jerry interrupted his musing.

“What’s that goofy smile about?” asked Jerry.

“Oh, just that the SAC would only supply us with fresh pilots if we took care of a dungeon portal that popped up on a beach.”

Tim paused to let Jerry understand what he said before continuing his explanation.

“So, I told him I would consider his request and hung up before he could respond.”

Jerry could only shake his head as a smile slowly grew on his face before breaking out in laughter. It took him a minute before he composed himself enough to comment on Tim’s audacity.

“You like to live dangerously, don’t you Tim?”

“I’m not too worried about it. We’re on a mission from—”

“From God?” interjected Cassandra.

“—from the State Department, ostensibly from the Secretary of State,” John finished with a smirk.

Cassandra shrugged unrepentantly at her interrupting joke, simply smiling and batting her eyes at Tim and Jerry. Tim laughed at the display.

“Ha, boy does she have your number Jerry,” laughed Tim.

“She does, and somehow, I’m not too upset about it,” Jerry replied. “Soooo, what are we going to do about our situation? We either need to tackle that dungeon or wait for the pilots to rest.”

“I think we need more intel on the portal before we agree to tackling it. Maybe I can get John to swing by and check it out while he’s out running around…”

“Why don’t a couple of us go check out this portal?” asked Cassandra.

“Hmm, I’ll see if the SAC will text me the location.”

John sent off his text asking for the location and more information on the portal. It took 20 minutes for Tim to receive a reply, however, all he got was a location.

“North Beach. That’s it? No picture or anything else? I’m tempted to tell this pompous ass where to shove this portal.”

“As entertaining as that might be, we aren’t really going to leave it to break, are we?” asked Jerry.

“No…let call John and see if he will check it out,” Tim sullenly answered.

It rang a few times before John answered just before going to his voicemail.

“Oh hey, you actually have your phone out of your Item Box.”

“Yeah, I have to so all the places I order food at can call me when the orders are ready.
