Whew, pricey, he thought, continuing down the line.

There were gems for everything. Critical strike percent, Intelligence, Luck, and even crafting elixirs which definitely drew his attention. He reached for one that caught his eye, when a small voice from behind the counter spoke up and startled him.

“Good day, dwarf. Name’s Flip, what can I help you with today?”

Evan reached into his pocket and pulled out the Umeric’s gem. “Hi Flip, I was hoping you could tell me a little about this one?”

The gnome’s little eyes almost popped out of his head as he grabbed the gem. “Where did you get this!?” he asked full of wonder.

“Umeric,” Evan replied sullenly.

“Umeric, eh? I love him! How did he come across this?”

“Well, he didn’t really get to tell me anything about it before he died.”

“Umeric is dead? No, he was just in here the other day. It can’t be,” the gnome responded, visibly shaken. Evan gave him a few moments to calm down.

“He wanted me to find his wife, Elrala. I was hoping you may be able to let me know if it had any sort of ability to protect or help me along my journey.”

“Oh, my good dwarf, it does. It most certainly does. This is a Life stone. It has the power, when used under the correct circumstances, to create and preserve life. It’s very precious, and many are unable to be used again after their first use.”

Taking a deep breath, he continued, “It takes a very strong minded and bodied person to wield a Life stone. It has passive effects as well, if used correctly. Take that hammer there for example.”

He motioned for Evan to bring his weapon closer and set it on the counter. He flipped the hammer over and pulled out a small sharp tool that looked like a flat-head screwdriver. He worked with precision, careful not to damage the weapon. After a few moments he pried free a section of the handle, revealing three slots just large enough to hold gems the size of Umeric’s.

“Here, see. You can place it in here and two others. Be careful though, some gems will not work in conjunction with others, and as you have noticed, they are very expensive.”

He placed Umeric’s gem into the top slot in the handle. “You’ll need to remove the gem in order to use its special power. This one should prove useful though. The Life stone has been known to give a nice boost to those who are lucky enough to use one.”

As soon as he removed his hand from the gem, it began to pulse gently. A pale green aura crept around the entire weapon, covering it in a misty green hue.

Evan lifted the hammer and turned it over in his hands. “This is really cool,” he said, hardly able to contain his excitement. While he held the weapon, he took a quick glance at his character sheet. Sure enough, after his recent increase to 80 HP from leveling his Constitution, the gem gave him a bonus of 40 HP bringing him up to a total of 120 HP.
