Skye
Skye tossed and turned in his bed, haunted by the shock and pain in Kalaâs eyes when he broke up with her. It gutted him utterly. She was such a pure soul. She gave of herself without ever asking anything in return. The very least she deserved was someone who supported her, and he couldnât even be that.
He kept replaying his decision, trying to convince himself that heâd made the right one. The Priestess has made him chose between his relationship with Kala and his motherâs life. Kala was strong â she was the gods-damned Chosen One as far as many people were concerned â she could hold her own. His mother, on the other hand, had no such skills. She was defenseless, she was an innocent, and she was his responsibility. The choice was obvious. So why did every part of him scream that it was the wrong one?
He didnât have the courage to face Kala or the strength to be around her and not go to her. He watched her from afar instead. He watched her care for Sorenâs wounded to assuage her own hurt. He watched her put several of them out of their misery, and he knew her well enough to know the toll that would take on her â and still, he kept his distance. He even returned to Bayre before she did because it hurt too much to watch her any longer.
Then she returned, and his resolve wavered. When he stumbled into her the next morning, it took all of his will not to reach for her. It was only the realization that she deserved better that gave him the strength to walk away. Stewing in his room, however, he decided that she needed to know that the break-up had nothing to do with her and everything to do with him. It was cliché, but he was overcome with the need to let her know.
He followed after her when she left the temple with Hawke. He had to hunt around to find them but spotted her eventually outside a nearby school. He approached slowly, debating what he would say when he got there. Indecision slowed his pace, and when he finally got close enough to announce himself, she turned and hugged Hawke with a joy that he hadnât seen her express in moons. He knew instantly that heâd made a mistake â sheâd moved on already; she wasnât as tortured as he felt. The rehearsed words died in his throat, and he choked. She turned at the sound and locked eyes with him â those beautiful eyes. They destroyed him.
He escaped as quickly as he could but had no time to dwell on it when plague descended on Bayre, and the city went into a panic. Were it not for Selineâs protocols at the airfield, the plague would have killed everyone in the city. People locked themselves in their homes and shunned all contact with others. Skye already felt dead inside, so fear of actual death didnât deter him.
