I moved out of the Encino house for good. Slick had played me and everyone knew it. I felt like a fool, I didn’t want to see anybody and I didn’t want anybody to see me. I didn’t even want to be in the same town with Slick. I needed a change of scenery, a change of company, and a change of heart.
So I jumped on a plane and flew to Detroit.
Detroit wasn’t just a city. Detroit was a man. Back around the time things were getting bad with Slick, I had gone to Las Vegas for a big championship boxing match. While there, I met a tall, handsome, and muscular fight promoter. I called him Detroit. By the way he carried himself in his elegant pin-striped business suit, I knew he had Game.
Detroit saw the same thing in me. He got me front- row seats to the bout and said, “Any time you want to come to the Motor City and get to know me better, let me know.”
As soon as I got there, Detroit put Anthony and me up in a magnificent suite on the top floor of the brand-new Omni Hotel. As I settled in and looked across the river, I took a deep breath. The drama of the Slick situation was behind me. I was ready to get to know this new man.
Detroit proved himself to be every bit the gentleman. He treated both my son and me with the utmost respect. He took Anthony to Toys “R” Us and practically bought out the store. He sent flowers every day. At night, he took us to the finest restaurants.
For a month, Detroit never made any moves on me. I felt that we had a romantic connection, but he was interested in more than sex. Furthermore, he wasn’t possessive and he wasn’t trying to play me.
If anything, Detroit was just as controlled, smooth, and disciplined as I was. He kept his business life separate from his time with me. I knew he was a hustler and I knew he had connections, but he kept that on the down-low. The only people he introduced to me were his uncle and his best friend, both of whom had their game just as tight as his.
It also became clear that Detroit wasn’t anyone to mess with. One time his uncle let it slip that Detroit had thrown his own cousin out of a second-story window after he didn’t pay one of his debts. His own cousin! All of it made me wonder what kind of business tactics this man was using.
It wasn’t long before I got my answer.
“So what do you do?” he asked me one night when the two of us were dining alone.
“I used to be married to a big drug dealer,” I said, and left it at that.
“Do you know anybody in California who has product?”
I said yes, but I didn’t tell him it was me. Just like he didn’t tell me his business, I wasn’t about to tell him mine.
