Julie waved half-heartedly at the young Woodland Fae as he shut the reliquary doors behind her. He cheerfully returned the wave, and his bright grin pierced her chest. She wondered how long it would be before the Wild Hunt went after the Order of the Sacred Blade, the home of the most powerful Arthurian artifacts in Avalon.

Dragonwall was gone. Which of her innocent subjects would be next?

Hat interrupted, You can’t think like that, Julie.

Why not? Julie shoved her hands into her pockets, ignoring the werewolves as they surrounded her on her way to Genevieve. I lost a whole village of people, Hat.

They haven’t gone after Tintagel, Hat reasoned, and it’s been three days. That’s given us time to fortify the castle.

They showed up out of nowhere in the cafeteria at the NYHQ. I don’t think fortifications can keep them out. Julie dealt a vicious kick to an unlucky pebble on the stone floor.

Her phone buzzed before Hat could respond. Adrenalin stabbed through her like broken glass in her veins, and she ripped the phone from her pocket. “Taylor? What’s wrong?”

“Easy, babe, easy. Nothing’s wrong,” Taylor soothed. “I called to check on you.”

“Oh.” Julie’s shoulders sagged, and she leaned against Genevieve. “Sorry. Every time my phone rings, I think it’s...” She couldn’t bring herself to say it. “Well, bad news.”

“I know.” Taylor sighed. “It’s understandable.”

“I don’t know where they’re going to strike next.” Julie pinched her nose. “I don’t know whether I want to be everywhere at once to protect my people or nowhere so they can’t be collateral damage.”

“How did it go at the reliquary?” Taylor asked.

Julie shook her head. “Dead end. Sir Bedivere doesn’t know any more about the Wild Hunt than Hat does.”

“It was worth a shot,” Taylor told her.

Julie shook her head. “I don’t have time for ‘worth a shot,’ T. I need to find the Hunt and stop them.” She fished for her keys. “I don’t know where to turn now. Maybe the library again. Lori might have forgiven me for setting her book on fire by now.”

Doubt it, Hat muttered.

“Have you eaten today?” Taylor asked.

Julie frowned. “What?”

“It’s not a hard question, babe.” Taylor chuckled. “Did you drink the yogurt I gave you this morning?”

Julie peered through the car window at the unopened bottle on the center console. “Would you believe me if I said I did?”

“Aw, honey. You have to eat. You’ve lost so much weight. You’ll never not be gorgeous in my eyes, but I’m worried about you. We all need you to keep your strength up, okay?”

Julie gazed at her reflection in the window. He was right. The strong curves that fighting had created on her thighs and shoulders were less.

“Meggie’s is right across the plaza from you,” Taylor wheedled. “Your poison detector is in the glove box.”

“I forgot it in my purse after we ate at The Dancing Rose,” Julie confessed.

“I know,” Taylor told her patiently. “I put it in the glove box. Go get yourself a plate of Sylthana fish and chips the way you like them.
