Aria

Aria pinned Ryke against the wall of the tavern, holding her knife to his throat. Jack touched her shoulder, but she didn’t loosen her grip.

“And what makes you think I’ll help you after you double crossed me?” Ryke asked. There was no fear in his eyes when he met Aria’s scowl.

“Just answer the question,” she hissed, pressing the blade to his scruffy skin. “Who are those pirates, and where would they take a mermaid?”

Ryke arched a brow. “Since when do you care what happens to a mermaid?” By the disdain in his tone, he didn’t like them either. At least they had that in common.

“I don’t,” Aria snapped. “She took something of mine, and I want it back.”

“And what’s in it for me?” Ryke flashed a smug smile, and Aria growled.

“How about you get to live?” She pressed the blade to his neck again.

“All right, enough.” Jack pulled Aria off of Ryke and watched as he rubbed his neck. “Tell us what you know.”

Ryke looked from Aria to Jack. “Fine, but I’ll need something in return.”

“Please, let me cut his tongue out,” Aria muttered to Jack, but he raised a hand.

“What do you want?”

Ryke turned to Jack, and Aria felt an uneasiness in the pit of her stomach.

“After we save your precious mermaid, you come with me.”

“Absolutely not,” Aria barked. And how many times did she have to say she couldn’t care less about saving the mermaid?

“Where will you take me?” Jack asked.

“Not where, mate.” Ryke smoothed his shirt. “To whom.”

Aria didn’t like the curiosity in Jack’s eyes. “You can’t trust him,” she whispered.

“He knew I was coming through the portal,” Jack reminded her. “So, whoever this person is, they may know why I’m here.”

Aria opened her mouth to protest, but there was nothing she could say to change his mind. Especially when he was determined to get answers. And to be fair, he deserved them. He’d done so much to help her.

“Fine…” she grumbled, and Jack’s face lit up.

He turned to Ryke with renewed enthusiasm. “Seems like you got yourself a deal… mate.” Jack offered his hand, but Ryke didn’t bother taking it.

“You don’t get to say mate, mate.”

Jack’s smile fell, and Aria wanted to slap Ryke for being a jerk. “So, where do we go from here?” Aria asked, putting her knife away.

“Where do you think?” Ryke cocked his head smugly. “The Dark Howler.”
