Jenna and Owens sat across the table from a scraggly-looking man about Owensâ height and forty pounds lighter, his long, brown hair and beard streaked with gray. What appeared to be the same army-olive button-up shirt from last night flapped open over a white T and holey jeans. He smelled of cigar smoke and beer as his beady eyes bore into Jennaâs with a look of hatred.
âWoman cop,â he sneered. âFigures.â
âYou better watch your mouth, boy!â Owens bellowed, despite the suspect being seven or eight years older than he was. âYou will address your complaints to me, Detective Owens, and give Lieutenant Ferrari the respect sheâs earned.â
âWhy are yâall dragginâ me in here?â he yelled back, throwing a tanned, spotted hand into the air. âFundamentally, I support the police, but something is backwards here. Why arenât you harassinâ those perverts and chasinâ them out of town instead of hasslinâ me? Theyâre the ones causinâ the trouble.â
âAnd you are the one who refused to supply your fingerprints or DNA last night,â Owens countered. âAre you trying to impede our investigation?â
âSo, thereâs one less queer on this earth,â Crowder spat out in derision as if he was talking about an exterminated cockroach. âWhy are you botherinâ? Why arenât you investigatinâ their underground child slave ring? Why arenât you questioninâ them about the missinâ kids?â
Jenna was confused. She had her finger on the pulse of every crime in the county, not just downtown Roanoke. âWhat child slave ring, Mr. Crowder? What missing kids?â
He turned an incredulous gaze to her. âDonât you ever listen to the news? Those faggots and drag queens are using a local hair salon to smuggle kidnapped children off to their secret ranch where they sell them to other pervs so they can use âem for disgustinâ things. Theyâre all child molesters and theyâre gettinâ away with it.â
Besides the fact there had been no reports filed for missing children in months and the idea of a secret drag queen ranch was absurd, nothing of the sort had been reported on the news.
âMr. Crowder, Iâm the head of criminal investigations, and we have had no reports of missing children or kidnappings, and almost all the contestants in the drag show are from out of town. Thereâs been no such reports on the news. Where are you getting this information?â
âOh, well, you must just listen to the major networks,â he replied, his dark eyes taking on a conspiratorial quality. âThe liberal media is corrupt and canât be trusted. They only tell you what they want you to hear. But if you tune into talk radio and the Freedom podcasts, youâll hear the truth of whatâs goinâ on. Drag is all just a front for an organized crime syndicate run by Bill Gates. Heâs holdinâ thousands of children in his basement and who knows what he does with âem.â
Nuts! The guy is completely off his rocker.
âWe brought you here to talk about murder, Mr. Crowder,â Owens interrupted, ânot crazy conspiracy theories.â
Colvin leaned forward, his features hardening with malice.
