Chapter 18

Clarissa

I kept running.

I didn’t know where I was going or if I was making progress, but I didn’t dare allow myself to stop. The fear wouldn’t let me. I thought about the dead officers who were tasked with guarding me at the hotel resort back in Rio. I thought about Isabella, dead at Perez’s command.

I couldn’t stop thinking about the way Perez nearly got his hands on me, how his goon nearly sliced my throat open with his knife. If I let these fake inspectors catch me, there was no telling what horror awaited.

So I kept going.

I kept going until my lungs burned so much I could taste copper on my tongue.

I kept going until my legs were about to give out. I was hopelessly lost at this point, surrounded on all sides by quaint buildings made of red brick and trimmed hedges and manicured lawns.

When I finally came across a uniformed officer in town, I was over the moon. I ran straight up to him, wheezing so hard I could barely get a word out.

“Officer!” I panted, frantic. “Officer, you have to help me.”

“What’s all this about, ma’am?” He was a portly fellow, his big round stomach jutting out from beneath his uniform. He had a kind face, though. Trustworthy eyes.

“I’m being chased! Please, you have to help me.”

“Slow down, slow down. You’re being chased?”

“Two men. After me. Pepper sprayed one guy. Might have given the other one a concussion. I’m in danger.”

He gestured with his hands like he was trying to spook a frightened animal. In many ways, I kind of was one. “It’s going to be alright, ma’am. Just take a deep breath. Let me grab my partner right quick and we’ll drive you to the station. We can get a full report from you there.”

I nodded, still struggling to catch my breath. “Yes, thank you. Thank you so much.”

“Oy! Peter!” the officer shouted over his shoulder. “We’re taking this lass to the station.” He turned his attention to me again. “Don’t you worry about a thing. You’re in good hands —Peter! Did you hear me?”

“I’m coming, I’m coming!” a man shouted from a few feet away. This officer was much younger than the one I’d been talking to. “What’s your name, ma’am?”

“Clarissa. Clarissa Watts.”

“Everything's going to be fine, Ms. Watts,” the first officer said calmly. “We’ll get you squared away and—”

BANG!

The second officer shot his partner at point blank range right in front of me. The sound of the gunshot rang loudly in my ear. It all happened so fast, yet I witnessed it in slow motion.

The first officer went limp, dead before he even hit the ground. Peter then turned the gun toward me, a cold indifference in his eyes. The realization that swept through me left me sick to my stomach.

He’s on Perez’s payroll, too.

“You’re coming with me,” he said, low and menacing. “Give me any trouble and I’ll shoot you dead right now.”

“No!” I screamed.

He lunged forward to grab me, gripping my wrist with such force I thought for sure he’d rip my shoulder out of the socket.
