ROGER FINALLY led Kurt to a recreation area in the preserve, where they stopped to rest behind a supply shed. They could hear their pursuers crashing through the brush, cursing at the woods and at each other. Before long they heard, “We’ll never find ’em in this godforsaken jungle.”

“Let’s get the hell out of here.”

Kurt and Roger waited till they could no longer hear their enemy retreating.

“Do you think it’s safe to go back?” asked Roger.

“Not on your life—or mine, either,” responded Kurt. “They may be waiting somewhere along the way or in the house, expecting us to wander back, and planning to pick us off.”

“So what do we do?”

Kurt pondered a bit. “Is there a road around here somewhere?”

“Yes, Elm Road. It can’t be more than half a mile; a bike path near here crosses it. Follow me.”

After a few moments of stumbling around, they were on the bicycle path, and after about ten minutes, came to the road.

“There’s a gas station down this way. I hope it’s still open.”

It wasn’t, but there was an outdoor pay phone. They were able to get a taxi, and then Kurt insisted on taking Roger to the emergency room at the closest hospital. The cut on Roger’s forehead took five stitches and a big white bandage. While the doctor was working on Roger, Kurt was telling their tale to the police. This time, the police seemed to take them seriously. From the hospital, they were driven in a squad car to Roger’s house. The broken window and other damage to the house interested the police. They convinced Roger to stay home, with a policeman as guard. His head was starting to throb from his wound, so he did not object strenuously. Kurt accompanied the police to Sylvester Claybourne’s apartment.
