As Caden parked the truck in the packed lot in front of Sunny Side Up Diner, I pulled out my cell phone. I had plenty of service, so I poised my fingers over the screen. I was about to type in my name when Caden spoke.

“You okay?” he asked.

I realized I was scowling down at my phone. I pushed my hair behind my ear and looked over at him. “Yeah, just not looking forward to what I’m about to do.”

“What’s that?”

“Check the internet to see if there’s anything about me on there. About my arrest.”

“Why do it, if you’re not lookin’ forward to it? You look tense.” He reached over and brushed his fingers lightly down my cheek. “Isn’t today hard enough as it is?”

He was right. There were plenty of challenges to face, what with my spellwork and the investigation.

“Why don’t you eat first,” he said.

“Okay. I really am hungry.” I stuffed the phone back in my purse, glad for the excuse to put off the task. “I’ll check the internet for anything about my arrest after I get some food in me.”

“Ha, internet,” Caden scoffed. He shook his head in bewilderment. “Now, that’s the most useless invention I’ve seen yet. Won’t help you wrangle a cow, that’s for damn sure.”

Caden and I followed another couple toward the diner doors. While the couple spoke to the hostess, I surveyed the joint. The ceilings were low and the houseplants scattered around made the place feel cozy. Sunlight streamed through hazy windows, bathing booths in pale light.

Waitresses and waiters in yellow uniform shirts and black aprons wove amidst the packed booths and tables. I eyed each one who passed, trying to figure if one of them might be Shayne. Soon I spotted one girl, twenty-something with a nose ring and tattoos on one arm who might fit the bill. She had blonde hair pulled up in a messy bun and a lean, athletic build. There was something predatory about how she scanned her tables that made me peg her as a shifter.

When it was our turn to speak to the hostess, I gestured to the blond woman’s corner of the diner.

“That’s Shayne, right? We’re hoping to sit in her section.”

“You got it,” she said with a snap of her gum. She beckoned us forward by flapping two big, floppy, laminated menus. “Let me fill you in on our breakfast special and Shayne will be over shortly to take your order. We’ve got the Make My Day platter: two sunny side up eggs, two biscuits with country gravy, bacon, and sausage.”

She seated us at a booth. All around us diners chatted and forks clinked on ceramic plates. The air smelled of good coffee and crispy bacon.

Within a few minutes Shayne approached and leaned over the table to grab the twin white mugs near the ketchup and sugar packets. “You two in on some sort of business?” she asked with a skeptical edge in her voice. She filled our coffee mugs from the pot of brew she carried.
