KASHI FOREST, WEST OF WALCOTT

Though they had plenty of extra horses, Gina chose to ride in one of the wagons with Lady Kenya. She left plenty of room in case Reese wanted to bed down as well. When they started, Reese insisted on riding with her father, while Jessie happily trotted beside them. Gina shivered when she recalled the smoldering gaze Dallas sent her way when they loaded up the wagons earlier. He had said little since his return from town after speaking with Faddy. She didn’t believe he grieved over Xandra’s death, but he might have equated her death with his dead wife’s several years earlier. Vonda and Xandra—twins by birth—both desired the same man, Dallas. Gina felt compassion for him but resisted the urge to give him any comfort.

Gina didn’t believe Xandra had ever actually loved Dallas, but she had made it abundantly clear she wanted to become his wife and have his children. She was power-hungry enough to believe it all could be hers—the man, her sister’s daughter, and the entire clan. All within her greedy grasp. During the trial phase, Xandra had admitted that she had Reese abducted simply due to her jealousy over Reese calling Gina ‘mum.’ Xandra had been so furious that she wanted to strike out against them both and discovered the perfect solution. The added benefit of driving a wedge between Gina and Dallas was a major bonus. Xandra had believed Dallas would turn to her for comfort. The woman’s madness was inconceivable.

Lady Kenya had declared at the final council meeting that, due to the fact Xandra had already been sentenced, she would not receive any clan burial rites. She called upon a couple of guards to dispose of the body without any blessings or prayers, and Poppy informed Gina that this treatment was nearly unheard of. Even indentured servants received a better send-off.

Visions of home intruded upon Gina’s thoughts as they continued through the forest. She tried to set such images aside, but the mere possibility of going back through the portal caused her heart to race. Kenya had reluctantly assured her that because she was clan, her status guaranteed her rights to her unborn child. She could leave this archaic, medieval realm for one of comfort and convenience. Back to an industrialized world filled with motor vehicles, vending machines, and telephones. Due to the advent of computer technology, God only knew what else would develop in the coming years.

Then she glanced at the man who stood in the way of that dream. Dallas couldn’t stop her from leaving, but he didn’t need to. Could she possibly take their child away from him? Gina had never believed she had a cruel bone in her body, so how could she even consider it? She caught sight of Reese’s beaming face, flushed with joy and excitement. Gina was too much of a coward to even mention such a possibility to Reese, knowing the child could never understand why Gina would want to go home.
