Chapter Ten

Tuesday morning, Anna was marking down yarn for the sale bin when Sandy called her. “Can we get together for drinks after work?” Sandy asked.

“Uh, sure.” Sandy had never asked Anna to any activity that didn’t include Dave and Jonas, too. Now that they were both widowed, were Anna’s efforts to be Sandy’s friend paying off? “I’d love to.”

“Meet me at Mo’s at six fifteen.” Not waiting for confirmation, she ended the call.

“Is something wrong?” Gemma dumped an armload of yarn onto the worktable. “You look upset.”

“No, nothing’s wrong.” She picked up the pricing gun again. “Sandy Weiss invited me for drinks at Mo’s tonight.”

“You don’t look too happy about it,” Gemma said.

“No, I’m happy. It was just...unexpected.” She picked up a skein of cashmere. This orange shade had been a slow seller and she needed to clear it out to make room for new stock. “I’m thinking of doing a display of one-skein projects. What do you think?”

“It’s a good way of encouraging people to buy some of the pricier yarn,” Gemma said. “One skein doesn’t make such a dent in the budget. Does Sandy knit or crochet?”

“I don’t think so.” Sandy had never showed interest in Anna’s own hand-knit items, and she had once declared she didn’t see the point of crafts of any kind.

“Maybe you can convert her. It’s a great stress reliever.”

Sandy probably relieved her stress by trail running or lifting heavy weights. Nothing wrong with that, of course, though Anna preferred yoga and knitting. She smiled at the thought that she and Sandy were truly opposites when it came to almost everything. But that didn’t mean they couldn’t be better friends.

A trio of customers entered—two women who were clearly together, and Kyle Saddler, who caught the door as it started to close behind them.

“Hello, Anna,” he said, zeroing in on her.

“Hello, Kyle,” she said. “How did your niece like her birthday gift?”

His expression clouded for a moment then cleared. “Oh, my niece. She liked it a lot. You made a great choice.”

He moved closer and Anna wondered if he didn’t feel Gemma’s gaze burning into him. “What can I do for you today?” she asked as she turned to neaten the display of yarn to her left.

“I heard you had dinner with the new sheriff’s deputy the other night.”

Her hand stilled and she cringed inwardly. Of course, people had seen her and Lucas at the restaurant. And some of them had talked. It was what people did. It wasn’t a small-town-only pastime, but living in a place where you knew everybody made it easier to notice what they were up to. She turned to Kyle. “I hope you haven’t been gossiping about me.” She tempered the words with a warm smile.

His ears turned pink. “Not gossiping,” he said. “But I figured maybe it meant you’d changed your mind about dating. So I thought I’d ask again if you wanted to have dinner with me.”

She pressed her lips together, buying time to think of kinder
