Sarah

Sarah climbed out of the car with Hayley right behind her laughing all the way. It was just like old times — but it was entirely different simultaneously — and Sarah wasn’t all that interested in trying to sort out the differences.

“Are you okay?” Sarah asked, holding out a hand to help Hayley steady herself.

“Yeah, I’m fine,” Hayley said. “I just can’t believe I’m back at the Meyer family farm. It’s such a weird feeling. It’s been a long time.”

“It wasn’t that long. We were just here a couple hours ago,” Sarah said.

“Very funny. You know what I meant.”

“I do. I don’t think I could ever forget what happened last time we were alone out here,” Sarah said. Her face burned, but she didn’t think it was from the alcohol.

People said all kinds of sentimental things about first kisses, but Sarah’s first with Hayley was different in a way she could never put into words. It was an awakening for Sarah in more ways than one.

“Remember all the fun we had in that barn?” Hayley asked after she’d closed the door to the car and the driver backed out of the long driveway. She stared at the barn’s shoddy and faded red exterior with wide, sparkling eyes like it was the most impressive thing she’d ever seen.

“Of course I do,” Sarah said, the tips of her fingers tingling. If there’d been any doubt in Sarah’s mind about the direction they were heading before, it evaporated as soon as those memories returned, as vivid and breathtaking as they’d been when Sarah lived them.

“Can we go inside? The barn, I mean?” Hayley asked. Sarah’s pulse quickened, throbbing in her temples. Clearly, Hayley wanted to take a trip down memory lane, but Sarah wasn’t sure she’d be able to stop herself from creating some new memories in the process.

“If you want,” Sarah said, and Hayley beamed at her in the darkness, her beautiful teeth twinkling like stars. Hayley’s hand slithered into Sarah’s, and Sarah jumped.

“Relax. It’s just so I don’t break my ankle in these heels,” Hayley said, and Sarah tried to laugh it off with her, but it didn’t work. From the moment she’d laid eyes on Hayley that first time in the dog park, Sarah had craved this kind of connection with her, though she’d been too afraid to call it what it was.

But after listening to Hayley sing a beautiful acoustic rendition of one of her most famous songs — one Sarah had been right in assuming was about her — she knew she’d been lying to herself all along. She’d never gotten over Hayley and maybe she never would.

Hand in hand, they walked slowly and carefully down Sarah’s driveway toward the barn, each of them stumbling on the stones. If Hayley was really that concerned about safety, she could’ve just taken off her heels and walked barefoot through the grass — but maybe that was Sarah’s farm girl tendencies poking through again.

“I think more than anything else this is the kind of thing I missed about hanging out with you,” Hayley said as they walked.
