Chapter 23

I don’t understand why you don’t trust my nose.

Fi sighed. “I do trust you, but he might be able to sense magic that passed your senses by.”

The wyrm gave a snort and rearranged herself around Fi’s neck. The witch winced as the small animal dug her claws into her skin. Fi tugged on the rope that her mother had helped get round the donkey’s thick neck and his pace switched from amble to saunter as they headed to Harris’ pumpkin patch.

The old warlock met them at the gate and let them in. He eyed the donkey with a bemused smile. “What’s that then?”

“Harris meet Timaeus. Timaeus, this is Harris.”

The donkey snorted. Harris went to stroke his ears. “Who’s a good boy then?”

“I wouldn’t do that if I were you.” Fi caught the warlock’s hand before he touched the donkey. Timaeus’ eyes glowed with a vicious cunning.

“Oh, right, yes, well then. Come on.” Harris stomped off over the muddy field and Fi traipsed after him, tugging the donkey with her.

“What manner of place is this?” Timaeus brayed as they picked their way over deep muddy furrows.

“This is a field.”

The donkey’s nostrils flared.

“I need you to tell me if any demons have been here.”

“How dare thou mock me? If I were not trapped in this mule, I would smite thee to dust.”

“I’m not mocking you. Some weird stuff has been happening in this town. People’s heads being ripped off, pumpkins being stolen. I want to rule out demonic forces. You got trapped in a donkey’s body, maybe something else from your realm is here too.”

“If any of my fellow demons had come through from our realm, I would have felt the ripple in the cosmos. Thou hast brought me here for nothing. Let us return home.”

“Please, Timaeus, can you sense around? Just think of the sugar lumps.”

The donkey took a deep breath, his mouth salivating, and he closed his eyes. “I sense the aftermath of magic....”

“What magic?” Fi leaned forward.

“A force of natural magic and lightning.”

Fi huffed out a sigh. Harris used magic on his pumpkins for sure, and she was the only witch she knew with anything like lightning powers. The donkey had picked up her aura. She tugged him over to the ditch where they had found Nigel.

“I’ll, er, wait ‘ere, if you don’t mind, Fi. I can’t…”

Fi scaled a large mound of mud and placed her hand on Harris’ shoulder. “It’s alright. I can take it from here and we can find our own way out. Thank you.”

The warlock looked relieved, and he tramped his way back to his house, leaving deep footprints in his wake.

Fi returned to the ditch. “And here?”

The ass opened his mouth and Fi got the impression he was breathing in the scene; it was unsettling. She shifted a little, her wellies sucking in the mud, but she stopped herself from backing away from the demon donkey.

“Ah, blood…”

Demons! All they think about is blood and power.

Fi tugged on the rope around his neck.

“How much
