Chapter 11

When my alarm went off, I groaned, reaching over and mashing the screen until one of my fingers hit the right button and silenced the unwelcome noise. I dragged myself out of bed and shuffled to the kitchen like a zombie, where I grabbed some more of the energy-boosting potion from the night before and chugged it like I was back in my first year of college.

“You know, maybe it’s just me, but I remember pulling all-nighters when I was younger, and it never felt nearly this bad,” Leanne said from the couch, where she held a mug between both hands. “This potion is helping, but I’m still tired. Meanwhile, I remember staying up all night to get an assignment done, downing a couple cups of coffee, and being good to go for the whole day. Is this what getting old is like? Because I’m not a fan.”

“It’s too early to ask me questions,” I muttered as Kaillie emerged, looking fresh as a daisy. She’d just had a shower. “How are you looking so perfect right now?”

“Are you kidding?” Kaillie replied. “I feel like I’ve been punched in the face. Repeatedly.”

“Well, you look amazing. Meanwhile, I’m pretty sure I look like someone who’s fallen down a set of concrete stairs.”

“Thanks,” Kaillie said with a chuckle. “I wish I felt that good. Anyway, the potion will help. I’ll take the rest of it with us today; I think we’re going to need it.”

“I agree,” Leanne said. “In fact, I wish one of us was a nurse. I want an IV of this stuff going directly into my veins.”

“That’s really not how this works,” Kaillie said with a smile. “Come on. Let’s get going.”

It was at that moment that I realized Cleo wasn’t here. “Hold on. Where’s Cleo?”

The other two looked around. “She’s not back after yesterday?”

“Cleo,” I called through the house. She hadn’t been waiting for us when we got to the car last night, but that wasn’t surprising. I knew she could take care of herself, and frankly, we had waited outside for so long that I figured she had just gotten bored and come home on her own. I had installed a cat door when she started spending large parts of her day outside so that she could come and go as she pleased.

“Cleo? Are you here?”

But no, there was no reply from my cat.

“I’m sure she’s fine,” Kaillie said, but I could see the worry on her face.

“Yeah,” I muttered. “Probably.”

“Do you want to stay here and look for her?” Leanne asked. “If you do, that’s fine. I can handle the business at the coffee shop today.”

I thought about it for a moment and shook my head. “No, I don’t think so. Not yet, anyway. Although if you don’t mind, when we get into town, I’m going to have a quick look around the main strip. After all, that was where she was last. Hopefully she just got bored and fell asleep under a heating vent or something.
