Chapter Eleven

A

re we in an assisted living complex or a five-star luxury resort? If this is what they look like, sign me up right now.

Wow, this place is fit for a king. I am way underdressed. It was like I was standing in the centre of a luxury private resort. The kind you get in those expensive holiday deals where you get all the food you could possibly eat and massages every day. Wooden balustrades lined the porcelain tile staircase and the stained-glass windows at the top let in just enough light to appear as if God was looking in from above. Several lounge seats scattered among potted greenery gave the feeling of an indoor garden party. If this is what the foyer looks like, I can only imagine what’s in store when you reach the bedrooms.

My gaze fell on the reception counter and it was just as grand as the rest of the place, complete with a shimmering white marble countertop. I pushed up on my tippy-toes and whispered in Tyler’s ear. “Let me do the talking.”

Tyler shrugged and his head tilted to the side. “Hey, this is your show, I’m just along for the ride.”

Putting on a professional smile, Tyler and I headed toward the reception area. A young woman looked up from a collection of documents and her strained smile met mine. Flustered was an understatement, I’d say more like stressed beyond belief. She dropped the papers and her fidgety hands picked at her fingernails while her shoulders hunched forward.

“Welcome to Noble Crest, how may I assist you today?” Her voice cracked with each rehearsed word spoken.

“Good morning.” I paused and looked at her name badge. “Isla, is it?”

The woman nodded and began sorting through the mess of documents on her desk as if they were confidential.

Poor girl looks like she’d rather be anywhere but here. “Are you okay? You seem a little under the pump?”

Her eyes glazed over and she fiddled with the necklace around her neck. “I…no…yes, oh gosh I’m so sorry. This is my first official day on the desk by myself and I guess I didn’t realise how overwhelming it would be.”

Tyler leant his elbow on the counter and flashed his pearly whites Isla’s way. “I think you’re doing an amazing job. I’m sure a smart, beautiful woman like yourself will have it sorted in no time.”

Oh please. No female’s going to fall for that line.

My eyes itched to roll at his corny attempt at flirting with the pretty redhead. I half turned my head his way when the redhead’s sheepish high-pitched cackle froze my movement. You can’t be serious.

“Oh stop, you’re too kind,” she said, blushing, her eyelashes fluttering double time. “Thank you for those nice words. What can I help you with?”

They continued smiling at each other. My jaw dropped and a sharp intake of breath dried my mouth. This is the first time I’d seen Tyler flirt, and I didn’t like it one bit. Talk about awkward and uncomfortable, and that was just me.
