CHAPTER 11
When Alec had come home from work the previous evening, I filled him in on what Brooks had told me. It was surprising that Kennethâs children had so much difficulty finding their place in the world. I would have thought that with the example Kenneth had set, it would have made things easier for them. But maybe Kenneth had spoiled them. Maybe they had gotten to a place where they expected him to hand them everything.
The weather was blustery again this morning, so we skipped our run again. Coffee was in order on such a chilly morning, so we headed to the Cup and Bean coffee shop for a latte.
âWe might have to make use of a treadmill if this keeps up,â Lucy said as we stood in line to order our coffee.
I nodded, absently gazing at the menu board. âI know what you mean. Itâs so easy to let things get in the way of our morning run. Thereâs a part of me that really wants to stay in bed on wintry mornings and not get up and run. A big part of me.â
She chuckled. âYou and me both. But I enjoy running. I like that we get to spend time together, and I like the way I feel after a run. Not so much during the run, but afterward I do.â
I nodded. âMe too.â We stepped up to the front counter. âI would like a large, toasted praline latte,â I said, âand a gingerbread scone.â
The barista nodded and looked at Lucy. âAnd what would you like?â
âI think Iâll take the same. It sounds yummy.â
The woman behind the counter nodded and got to work on our drinks. I glanced over at the corner table and spotted Mr. Winters with his nose buried in his newspaper.
We paid for our drinks and scones and headed over to say hello. âHow are you doing, Mr. Winters?â I asked, sitting down across from him.
He looked up at us. âFreezing. What are you two up to?â
I shook my head as I reached beneath the table and scratched his little dogâs head. âWhoâs a good girl?â The little poodle wagged her stumpy tail and licked my hand. âI knew it. Youâre a good girl.â I looked up at Mr. Winters. âWeâre sticking our noses into places they donât belong. Have you learned anything new?â
Before he could say anything, the front door opened with a rush of cold air, and I turned to look. It was Alec. He was bundled up in his wool coat with a scarf around his neck. He nodded at me and headed to the counter to place his order.
âWeâve been shirking our duties,â Lucy said before Mr. Winters could answer my question.
âWhat do you mean?â I asked.
She nodded at Alec. âWe usually bring him coffee, and we havenât done it in weeks.â
She was right. Alec worked hard, and we usually picked something up for him from the coffee shop and dropped it by his office. âOh, youâre right.â
Alec paid for his coffee and headed over to us.
