Rena Kingsmore - Alive

After thirty years as a federal government or associated agency employee, with no private sector, or non-governmental, work experience, Rena Kingsmore was the Assistant Deputy Minister of Canada's Inland Security Secretariat. She earned between one hundred and fifty and one hundred and seventy-five thousand dollars annually. Rena married for love at twenty-two. Three children soon followed. By thirty-five, comfort and security had replaced love. Shortly after her fortieth birthday, her youngest child left for university, and she was free to pursue her career with renewed ruthlessness. Now, age fifty-seven, she had reached the pinnacle of her career, and in two years, she would be able to retire with a maximum, index-linked pension. All she had to do was play the game and hang on.

Rena was a tall, full-figured woman, with big bones, wide hips, large feet, long legs and a long stride. A strong, straight nose dominated her wrinkled, hollow-cheeked face and orderly brown hair, full and thick, sat on wide shoulders: mannish. Unfeminine.

Despite her affluence, Rena Kingsmore was cheap, cheap like people with money often are. She screwed every penny from a purchase and avoided personal expense and maneuvered or bullied others into paying. She was a condescending, vindictive grudge holder and a poor judge of character, who kept to the middle of the road and ignored problems for as long as possible. An intelligent but weak and unoriginal leader, able to grasp the big picture but unable to add to the canvas. No more than a policy parrot, who used her position and rhetoric to promulgate government views and stifle creative or inquisitive minds. Despised by minions, feared by direct reportees, and accommodated for mutual benefit by peers, Rena Kingsmore ran the secretariat with malice and indifference, only attempting to lead through professionalism or compassion for personal gain.

Even when Rena Kingsmore did attempt to provide some kind of team building leadership, she would fuck up the basics. For example, each summer she would host a barbecue for the staff at her home. Kingsmore lived in an exclusive neighbourhood, owned a smart house with a large yard, and a beautiful, south facing swimming pool. It sounded good, and it should have been, except for a few details, like BYOB, timing, speeches, and more recently, BYOM/V - Bring Your Own Meat/Veg.

BYOB stood for Bring Your Own Beverage (beverage, not beer, although beer was allowed). BYOB was not such a big deal. BYOB was a common requirement when large numbers of friends came together for an afternoon and evening of socializing.

But the staff party/barbecue only lasted for two hours, from one to three p.m., which made it unlikely to be a booze fest. Most of her employees thought that with her substantial income, she would pay for a few drinks, especially as only fifteen or so people attended. At two beers each, hell, at four beers each, Kingsmore might have spent one hundred and twenty dollars or approximately .0008 per cent of her annual salary.

In addition, the timing was poor: one to three p.
