Chapter 23

“Where is it?” Gilda shrieked. She charged the safe, groped around toward the back, and pulled out a notecard. She let out a startled gasp and flung the note as if it had bitten her.

Sage picked up the paper and read it as she handed it back to Gilda.

I know what you wished for: true love.

“What does that mean?” Sage asked.

“It means Warrick is the killer and he stole the documents from my safe,” Gilda replied. “And I’m going to get them back right now.”

Sage caught up as the widow was storming out the front door, because Meena and Minette had just reached the porch, each carrying a basket.

“Gilda, there you are,” Meena said. “You poor thing. We know how hard it is to lose someone special in your life. I brought over a basket of my comforting apple-spice muffins.”

“And I brought you my lemon-poppy scones that will raise anyone’s spirits,” Minette said.

“Leave them on the porch,” Gilda said, pushing between the women and racing down the walkway.

“Yes, leave them on the porch,” Leslie said with a smirk. She was still overseeing Diggory’s flower planting.

“We most certainly won’t fall for that,” Meena said. “You would probably contaminate them with some of your pungent flowers.”

“Or worse, steal them and eat them all yourself,” Minette added.

“I would do no such thing. I’m too busy planting these phantasmas that Gilda asked me to bring over. I would never just stop by unannounced. And I’ll have you know that these are some of the flowers I was telling you about. They attract ghosts and spirits, so don’t you ever gossip about me having strange bedfellows again.” Leslie huffed and turned her full attention back to Diggory.

“Well, I never,” Meena said. “Minette, let’s get out of here. We’ll bring our baked goods back later when they can be safely delivered.”

“I’m right behind you, Meena,” Minette said.

“Tempest is going to kill me,” Sage mumbled to herself as she lifted her robe and rushed down the street. She was out of breath when she reached the First Falls Bank on the southwest corner of the town square. The bank was a red-bricked two-story building with a purple roof. Each side of the bank extended symmetrically with three windows on each floor. The upper ones arched regally with a green mosaic decoration. Two green columns stood on either side of the front door and rose to the triangle gable at the top of the first story. A blue flag bearing the Psychic Falls symbol of a crystal ball showing a waterfall surrounded by pines fluttered in the wind on the rooftop.

When Sage entered the bank, Gilda had already approached the wooden teller cage, which had two windows with bars in front of them. The women seated on stools inside the cage smiled, but their expressions quickly changed as the recent widow grabbed hold of two of the bars in front of the left station and started shaking them.

“Where’s Warrick?” Gilda asked. “I know he’s hiding back there. Open the door so I get to his office this instant.
