Another evening, a man with a Welsh accent so broad it was difficult to catch every word, phoned in. âDiane, my wifeâs been told she canât have children,â he said. âItâs upsetting as weâd love to have a family. Do you think thereâs any hope for us?â
Thatâs sad, I thought, as I turned to the little bare patch on the wall I used to see my pictures. After a moment or two, a toddler with silky dark hair and wide brown eyes beamed back at me.
âWell I donât know what youâve been told or why,â I said to the man, âbut I feel your wife will be pregnant very soon. I can see you having a beautiful little girl. Sheâs gorgeous, with very dark hair and big brown eyes. Adorable she is.â
Naturally the man was delighted to think their wish would come true, but obviously he was doubtful too. Doctors had assured his wife it was impossible for her to conceive, so it was difficult to see how my prediction could be right.
Nevertheless, he thanked me and went off to tell his wife.
I thought no more about it, but a few months later, he phoned the radio station again. He wanted to tell me the thrilling news: amazingly, against all the odds, his wife was pregnant and theyâd been told the baby was a girl.
âAnd sheâs bound to have dark hair and eyes,â he added, âbecause weâre Asian.â
I also ended up doing a one-off phone-in show for a radio station in Birmingham. Kerrang Radio. It stands out in my mind for one amusing call.
A rather bored sounding man came on the line. Well it was late at night. Maybe he couldnât sleep either.
âI donât believe in all this,â he said. âYouâll have to prove it to me. Tell me something about where Iâm going in my life.â
I glanced at the wall and was immediately shown a map of France. Then I saw an articulated lorry beginning to drive right across the map.
âYouâre going to France,â I said, âand I see you travelling in a truck.â
There was a strange, strangulated cry on the other end of the line. Then the man started to laugh. âI donât believe this,â he said incredulously. âIâm in my truck right now. Iâve just stopped in the services, but Iâm on my way to France. Iâm literally just heading for Dover.â
The Kerrang DJ sitting beside me almost dropped his mug of coffee. I laughed. âWell you did ask where you were going with your life!â I told the caller, cheekily.
It was all going well. The radio shows were popular and my readings were picking up again. I was just so relieved my work was returning to normal and didnât seem to have suffered from my brief spell of emigration. Though the same couldnât be said of me â or at least my body. I was certainly more relaxed now I no longer had to worry about the situation with Peter, but despite my calmer feelings, I still seemed to get so tired.
