Chapter Nineteen

William glanced over after the flick ended and she was asleep. What do I do now? Leave her there? Carry her up to her room?

He went to the kitchen and listened for heartbeats. The rest of the house was asleep.

He removed the blanket and placed it on a chair, then gently picked Carys up and carried her upstairs. She was soundly out and didn’t twitch.

When he reached the door, he adjusted her a bit so he could turn the knob, then walked in and laid her on the bed and took her shoes off. Nice room. Suited her. Perfectly organized, elegant, and expensive. She still hadn’t moved, so he chanced a kiss on her forehead, then left and quietly latched the door.

Shutting off the rest of the lights around the house, he returned to the basement. It was considerably too early to sleep, so he settled in for more telly, flipping channels. Could get used to free cable. He eventually found a footie match. After heating more blood, he looked in the mini-bar and poured a glass of aged scotch. Put his feet up in the comfy chair.

William entertained the brief thought of being part of her life here before pushing it aside. She hadn’t given any indication she looked at him as more than a friend. Casual acquaintance, even. An interesting novelty. She flirted, but she was an outgoing girl. She’d come out with it if she wanted someone.

The cats were curled up in the chairs to either side of him. At least he passed inspection with some species. Most animals were wary of demons, but her fur-balls hadn’t blinked. Even the guard dog accepted him on the property. Beautiful animal with intelligence in his eyes.

Maybe a little too much.

Dawn soon approached on Christmas Eve and he felt the call of sleep.
