Chapter 20

Michael jolts upright as his security sensor goes off. Checking the app on his phone, he sees it’s the first sensor a mile down the road.

“Fuck,” he grumbles.

Dani comes running down the hall to his room. “Michael, what is it?”

“Someone’s here. Go get in the room I showed you last night.”

“It’s seven in the morning. Who the hell could it be?”

“Get in the room now, Dani.”

Michael’s voice is stern enough Dani does as he says.

Locking herself in the panic room, she waits and prays that the man she still loves, the one who owns her heart, will be alright.

Even though it’s only about twenty minutes, it feels like a lifetime before Michael opens the door to the panic room.

Dani launches herself into his arms. For such a short time, a thousand scenarios ran through her mind.

“Hey, it’s okay,” Michael reassures her but is pleasantly surprised at her gesture.

Lowering Dani back to the ground, he introduces the man Tex sent.

“Danielle Lazzari this is Faulkner Cooper. He’s an expert on explosives.”

“You can call me Dude.”

“Thank you for coming. And you can call me Dani,” she says as she extends her hand.

Dude hesitates to wonder what her reaction will be to his mangled hand. But if Dani was repulsed by it, she never let on. She shook it with purpose. He liked that.

There’s a bit of a lull, and Dani senses the two want to talk without her.

“I’m going to get changed while you two talk,” she says as she slips by the two men.

An hour later, feeling fresh, Dani emerges from her room and joins Michael and Dude in the kitchen.

They fill her in on the information they have.

“So, you’re telling me that whoever did this used C4 with a timed detonator? I don’t understand. Paul was in the car with us, what if there was traffic or something. We would’ve all died, including him.”

“Honestly, I think it was meant to scare you and not kill you. There was a kill switch. He must’ve planned for any delay. Apparently, he didn’t want to die,” Dude explains.
