MOTEL

Yvonne

I walked to the nearest road to Grey’s place with all my stuff. I probably looked like one of Los Angeles’ many homeless people, with all my worldly possessions in my arms. I went into a coffee shop and ordered a cup of drip coffee. There was an eye roll from the teenage barista, but she poured me a cup of coffee. I sat in the corner and pulled out my phone to dial Tia.

“Hey, I left that guy.”

“The guy who was keeping you safe?” Tia asked.

“Yes.”

“What are you going to do?”

“I’m going to have to hide out somewhere else.”

We both knew that I didn’t have the money to hide indefinitely. It was possible that I should take a plane out of the country to somewhere that he wouldn’t want to find me.

“Ray has been tearing up the whole neighborhood looking for you.”

“What should I do?”

“You could check into a motel under my name.”

“We don’t really have the money for that.”

“It’s temporary.”

She rattled off the address of the place. Tia had clearly done her homework before I called. “I’ll text you the address, too. They’ll know to expect you when you arrive. And the credit card on file is mine.”

“You don’t have to…” I said, knowing that neither of us could comfortably afford it.

“I do have to. Jeremy is the reason you’re in this mess.”

“Do you think Ray is going to kill anybody else?” I didn’t know if Jeremy had discussed things with her.

“I don’t know, but I don’t want him to kill you,” said Tia, very firmly. “Jump in a car and get to the motel. We’ll figure things out later.”

Considering that I was in a cafe, things could be better. After calling a car, I gathered my stuff and waited on a bench outside. When the car came, I stopped myself from crying as I went further away from Grey. After the bet with Matt, I couldn’t bring myself to trust him. He thought that I was somebody that I wasn’t. He also had shamed me about letting Ray literally get away with murder.

Nobody looked out for me but me. I learned that at a young age. The only exception seemed to be Tia. I wanted to say that I didn’t owe anything to anyone else in my neighborhood, but I could nearly hear Grey talking to me, trying to convince me that I had a moral duty to make my neighborhood a safer place.

When the car came to a stop, I tipped the driver and thanked him before pulling my stuff into the motel. I gave them my real driver’s license, and they gave me a key card that would get me into a room.

There was a smell of mold in the hotel. There were two empty vending machines in the lobby. It would be good to stay anonymous here, but I was going to have to figure out how to find something to eat. I was sad that I had skipped out on Luisa’s dinner.

Once I got to my room, I took a shower.
