CHAPTER SEVENTEEN
As Katie and Leblanc climbed into their rental SUV, Katie was still feeling deeply shocked at what she had seen. Something about the vulnerability of that body, cradled in the tree, made her feel viscerally disturbed and even more determined to find out who was responsible. Widening the net was the next logical move, since the construction site itself seemed well managed, with no opportunity for a rogue killer from those crews to roam and strike.
Because the kills had started so recently, it was surely logical that another crew, working nearby, might be responsible. If not, they would then have to investigate people with a motive in the town itself. But Katie thought that given the speed and suddenness of these kills, it could well be that the killer was from a neighboring crew, someone who had recently arrived, who was living out their murderous urges, believing they were anonymous and would never be found.
They headed out of the site in silence. It was a cool, breezy morning. A weak sun was struggling to break through low clouds, but only a few brighter glimpses were yet visible.
"If we donât find anyone working nearby, then the town itself can be our next step," Katie suggested.
Leblanc shook his head. "I think it's someone who has recently arrived here. I believe we are looking for a bad apple, someone who is using the circumstances to kill, knowing that this place is full of temporary workers."
At least they had options, Katie thought, trying to see the situation in a positive light, even though she felt their best leads hadnât panned out, and had the uneasy feeling they were already clutching at straws.
"True," she agreed.
They started up the SUV and drove over the rutted track, heading out of the construction site. Katie noticed that there were several people at the entrance looking stressed and worried. They seemed to be setting up a boom gate system.
She knew it wouldn't help and she knew they knew too. But in that situation, it was at least some kind of action that they could take. She understood only too well how ineffectual they felt. So did she.
They drove in silence for a while, passing a convoy of trucks heading toward the construction site.
"Turn right here. This might take us around the site," Katie suggested, doing her best to get her bearings in this thickly forested area.
Leblanc did as she suggested.
They drove over a humpback bridge, which was a few yards above a creek. Past the bridge, the road began to climb.
"What's that on the right?" Katie had spotted a few roofs, hidden in the trees.
Leblanc drove closer. They stopped and climbed out.
The air smelled different here, away from the diesel and dust of the construction site. She could pick up the smell of pine, the freshness of the breeze.
"It's a campsite," Leblanc said, as they walked down the overgrown path. "But it looks to be disused."
"Yes, it does."
The simple, basic buildings looked neat and tidy, but the grass was long and the windows were dirty.
