Chapter Ten

But fortune smiled on Mason in a way it never had before. It started with him being asked to play central defense for MDPD soccer team in an upcoming match. Mason had played on and off for the team in the past, usually when they were down a player, but this time he jumped at the chance when he found out the team would be playing the Southern Florida US Marshals. Kendall Astin was their star goalkeeper, a man with a reputation for saving every ball that came his way.

Mason was interested. Not so much in the match, but in what he might find in the away team’s locker room. Ten minutes in, he brought down the US Marshals’ center forward with a reckless challenge while the player was clean through on goal. It was an instant red card and a penalty, and Mason hung his head as he trudged past his glowering team mates and disappeared down the tunnel. He would probably never be asked to play again, but it was a small price to pay for potentially getting a lead on Kayden’s whereabouts.

First he ducked into his own locker room to pluck a lock-picking device and his cell from his bag, then he hurried across the corridor into the US Marshals’ locker room. For a moment he stood surveying the bank of lockers before him. A total of fourteen doors were closed—there were eleven of the first team players, plus three substitutes. Mason set about opening them all, rummaging through coat pockets and bags for wallets to identify their owners, then closing the doors again when he was unsuccessful. The eighth locker yielded an expensive pinstriped suit and the wallet of Kendall Astin. But it wasn’t his wallet Mason wanted.

He dipped his hand into the other pocket and found Kendall’s cell phone. Flicking the case open, he was confronted with a pin code request. He knew Kendall’s date of birth; it had come up while they were on stake-out. He was born on New Year’s Day. Mason entered 0101 and he was in. Too easy. What an egotist. He checked all the calls Kendall had made a week ago. Nearly all were to numbers already stored in his address book, the recipient’s name identified. Plenty were business-related. He saw his own name there, from when Kendall had called him to check what time the stakeout had started on their first night working together. So it had to be a call made after that day.

Soon he’d found only two numbers which were unidentified, one a local Miami number. The other was a five-four-one area code he wasn’t familiar with. He copied them both to his phone before locking the door and hightailing it out of there.

Back in his own locker room, he sat on a bench and dialed the first number. It was answered by a bright female voice.

“Miami Bespoke Tailors, how may I help you?”

“Sorry, wrong number.” Mason hung up. He dialed the next number and waited.

A crisp, professional male voice answered.
