Chapter Twelve
At 4:30 a.m., I woke up, went through my morning routine, then loaded up the coffeemaker in the kitchen and left a few scones wrapped for Nate.
Getting Biga into the crate was hard. He didnât want to give up his comfy spot next to Nate. When Biga realized I was serious about leaving, he finally jumped off the sofa and crawled into the crate.
I drove down Sunnyside since Iâd gotten into the habit this week. There were no lights on at Eddieâs. I didnât see any cars on that stretch of the street. Bradâs truck wasnât on the street doing surveillance. It was cold this morning, and there was a bite in the air.
Beck came through the back door of the bakery at 6:30 a.m., pink-cheeked from the cold and eager to bake.
âCan I put on the Irish pop? Iâm so into it now. I canât get the songs out of my head.â
âGo ahead, Beck.â Beck was obsessed by a soft pop song by the Irish band, The Blizzards. She knew all the words. So we heard the song a lot.
âIâve got three batches of cinnamon roll dough ready to fill and roll up. After that, I can fill the frittata shells for you so you can get the beignets going.â
âThanks, Gracie. I think people are going to want warm things this morning.â
âAnd the dining area will be packed.â
Before we opened, when I had a momentâs break, I picked up my phone and texted Elana to see if sheâd be up for meeting at The Riverside tonight. Nateâs words last night had stuck with me. I had more sympathy for Kirk, yet I also knew his time was running out. He had to meet with the Chief.
During our mid-morning lull, I checked my phone to find two messages.
Thanks for the coffee and scones. â¤ï¸â¤ï¸â¤ï¸
