FIGURE 6 Dream toilet sequence

The two different storyboards for Caravaggio that follow indicate the film as it was eventually made and an entirely different approach. The first set illustrate a different use of storyboards in that they were intended to raise money for the project and actually propel it into production. The original storyboards for Caravaggio (figure 7) were very elaborate and based on the premise of filming in all the great palaces of Italy. The budget intervened, with only a small amount of funding from the BFI to produce the film on, their original grand plan would not be possible. Hence the notion was adapted to the use of key visual motifs that stood for Italy and these punctuate the frame rather than fill it (figure 8).

Every now and then a bit of money would come in from somewhere and I’d go off to Rome and have a look at the paintings. Or we’d go off to Tuscany and sit in a little hill house that belonged to a friend (of the art dealers) and do storyboards, not for the special effects but so that they could be used to raise money. (Hobbs, author interview, London, 2000)

Thus we see that the idea changed quite dramatically from the initial concept to the finished film.

Location scouting

Different countries and regions have Film Commissions that list locations in their area and deal with production companies’ needs in this respect. ‘The Liverpool Film commission advertises itself internationally as a lookalike for … Nazi Germany and cities of the Eastern bloc’ (Miller 2000: 42). Reconnaissance is carried out to all possible locations to assess their suitability on practical, technical and aesthetic grounds. Is the location appropriate in terms of size (is it large enough to fit cast and crew), situation (too noisy next to a busy road, too difficult to get to in the middle of nowhere), decoration (is its character an element to be enhanced or disguised)?
