Chapter 6
Henry sat on his stack of trashy romances and cleaned his whiskers.
“Whatever were you thinking?” Vanessa washed out the food dishes and the empty cat food cans.
Henry gave a dainty sneeze and looked around the shop. Most of the other cats had already gone back upstairs to Vanessa’s apartment.
“But why did you want to go out?” she asked. “You never go out.”
He turned his piercing eyes on her and blinked.
Vanessa put her head to one side. “I know what you said about talking to your friends, but don’t you usually do that at night? You’ve never left the shop before.” She pulled one last can of cat food from the cupboard by her knees and set out a fresh dish.
Henry surveyed the spines of the books under his feet. Scantily clad men and women in various states of intimacy surrounded him on all sides.
“What could you possibly want to show me out on the street at this time of day?” she asked. “I don’t understand you at all, and you’ve always been such a sensible cat. You’re the most responsible cat I’ve ever had, and now I have to worry about you running out into the street. I’m beginning to wonder if I shouldn’t leave you upstairs with the others after all.”
She set the dish of food down on the floor across the room as far away from the other cat dishes as possible. Then she cleaned out the last can and put the can opener away. Henry jumped down to the floor. He strode over to the dish and sat down and sniffed it.
“I know I don’t have to worry about you,” Vanessa went on. “I just don’t understand. All right. I’ll just have to trust you.” She went back to the front of the shop. Only then did Henry eat his food.
Vanessa sat down on her stool, but her head shot up when the doorbells rang. She smiled when Pete Wheeler walked in.
“I didn’t think I’d see you again so soon,” she told him.
“Why not?” he asked.
“I thought you’d want to give our relationship some distance,” she replied. “I thought you might want to think things over after I rejected your advances the other night.”
He studied her. “Did you reject them? I didn’t get that impression. If you wanted to reject my advances, you’ll need to be a lot more direct than that. Don’t say you’ll consider my offer when you really mean no. Did you really mean no?”
Vanessa shrugged. “No. I meant I would consider it, and I am.”
“Then you didn’t reject me,” he returned. “Anyway, I didn’t come here to talk about our relationship.”
“Oh.” Vanessa wilted. “What did you come here to talk about?”
“The murder case,” he replied. “Have you learned anything about Furley?”
“Not about Furley,” she told him. “But I did learn a few things that I didn’t know. They might not have anything to do with the murder case, but they’re interesting, either way.”
“And what was that?” he asked. “What did you learn?”
“I learned that quite a few people around this town have reason to hate Sergio,” she told him.
