"Ugh," the man grunted through clenched teeth, digging his fingers into Julia Wild's hips as she rode atop him, hardly aware that he was there at all. He could have been a cucumber for all she cared. He opened his eyes just in time to see her shudder and relax. The bitch hadn't even worked up a sweat. He collapsed inside of her as he realized this. Even his dumpy wife managed to work up a sweat.

"Oh," Julia soothed, rolling from him and surveying his poor excuse for manhood. "Not quite up to it today? Bad day at the bank?"

"Yeh," he growled, moving off the bed. "Got a lot on my mind. I guess you're not one of those things."

He grabbed a towel and wrapped it around himself, the embroidered LAC logo tucked in at the waist. He had meant to sting Julia Wild, but, looking back at her, he realized that she hadn't even heard him. Why he bothered to continue with his effort to best her was beyond him. No one ever had; no one ever would. He knew those in the club who had claimed to drive her to passion were as full of shit as he was. After all, who was he to be honest in the steam room? They all knew about Julia, but no one wanted to admit failing to bring her to the brink. Well, someday someone would. Too bad it couldn't be him.

Now she stood by the window of the guest room looking out across the city, her fine breasts pointed forward as though identifying a landmark. Her stomach was flat, her legs long. He felt himself rising again. Turning away, he decided that one humiliation for the day was enough. Better a cold shower. He left the short-haired woman to her thoughts.

Julia heard the shower running. She reached for her purse and took out a cigarette. Flipping her gold lighter, she held the flame to the tip, inhaled, then held the flame away and considered it. What, she wondered, would it feel like to be on fire? She truly would like to know. Not because she wished to destroy herself, but because she wished to know what true pain felt like. Not pain of the heart or soul. That pain had been with her so long that it was a part of her, it hardly hurt at all anymore. Well, once in a while it did. It hurt when Dick turned her away, unwilling to give her a chance to be a wife again. He was unwilling even to meet her halfway. She was so tired of all this and all these men. But what else was there for her to do? She had fallen too far. Dick had been pushed to a horizon she couldn't reach. The days had become so long. There was a need to fill the minutes which ticked by so very, very slowly. Only Gareth seemed to understand, and even he had been distant of late.

Julia snapped the lighter shut.
