Men were basically simple creatures, Melody Harper thought, though you could never tell them that. Gerrard, for example, thrived on the push-pull of affection then distance. By keeping him uncertain and off balance, she’d kept him entranced; for years. And one day he’d make her a wealthy woman.

Some men wanted sex. The notch-on-the-bedpost type. They often made lousy lovers because they were preoccupied with themselves and their own enjoyment. Others merely wanted the appearance of sex. Elderly businessmen who wanted some young, pert arm-candy. They could be strung along for months or even years simply by hinting to their friends and business associates that the intimacy was deeper than it really was.

So what about this one? A married man with six kids, Jane said. And a vasectomy. And an ordinary house on the end of an ordinary row of terraces.

What indeed?

She smiled to herself and undid the second button on her blouse.

She hadn't found out much online. Apart from a brief biography on the Bluebelle website, there were no social media pages or blogs or anything of that sort. The legacy of a career policeman, perhaps. Or a crashing bore. The mention of undercover work was intriguing though, suggesting someone worldly wise, someone sharp enough to spot the age-old games and disciplined enough to walk away if he sensed he was being played. In short, a challenge. Perhaps even one equal to her wiles.

Of course, it may never come to that. But if it did she liked a challenge.
