Chapter 27
Why didn’t you tell me the Lukin kid was still alive?” I screamed into the phone at Josh as soon as we were back in my car.
“I thought you knew,” my colleague said mildly.
“Last thing I saw they were loading him onto a stretcher. I swear they pulled the sheet over him.”
“He’s not out of the woods yet. He’s got head trauma and they’re doing brain scans.”
“I heard it was a concussion.” I stopped to consider. Maybe it was good I hadn’t known. It had allowed me to bluff Clavendish with utmost sincerity. “The cops will have a lot of questions when he wakes up.”
“Hospital says it could be a while,” Josh said.
“They better post an armed guard. Someone wants him to take the big sleep.”
“LAPD’s there around the clock,” Josh said. “What a pisser. You were so close to learning something. Now they’re not going to let us near him.”
I already had something important—the Prisoner of Memory. But I needed to talk to Lukin to learn more. He was the only one who knew the whole story. Besides the killer. What a scoop it would be if I could lay out the entire story in the Times . But for now, I wanted to keep it to myself. It was a decision I’d live to regret.
“One last thing,” I said to Josh. “Can you call your friend Lansing and ask him something about Clavendish, that older FBI guy who’s the Russian expert?”
“Sure. You want to date him?”
“Your attempts to pry personal information out of me are pathetic. I want to know if he’s really got heavy gambling debts or it’s just a nasty rumor.”
“Why would they keep an agent who’s made himself vulnerable?”
“Maybe that’s why they’re retiring him.”
“What’s this got to do with the Lukin kid?”
“Just a hunch. I’ll tell you everything soon.”
“Okay, Lois. But keep your phone on. Honestly, I don’t know why I let you lead me around by the nose.”
“Because you want to get in my pants and you delude yourself into thinking you have a chance.”
There was a long silence.
“You don’t know the half of it,” he said.
