A week later, Princess Tharbis arrived at Aksum. Her people cried out in ululation when they saw her in the hands of the Egyptians. She wept when she found her father tied to the wooden stake. She gently placed her mother’s gift back around the king’s neck and looked with disdain at Moses and General Akil. She refused to meet with them or allow them to visit her. Moses insisted that ten of his guards accompany her to the palace in the city.

He spoke to the guards in front of her. “The Princess is to receive no visitors. She is confined to the palace until she agrees to meet with General Akil.”

The next day, Tharbis had a change of heart and returned with her jailers to the general’s camp. He graciously bowed and welcomed her, inviting her to sit down.

The general smiled at her. “Prince Moses did not do you justice, your Highness. Your beauty is beyond words.”

Moses grinned and watched her face change slowly from disdain to the slightest hint of a smile.

“Release the king,” the general ordered. It surprised everyone and brought joy to the princess. They stood as the king was released and walked forward, holding his head high. Tharbis too straightened her back and lifted her shoulders with pride.

Akil addressed King Meroe. “Your Majesty, you will remain unchained if you swear before your gods to honor your word and will make your daughter queen before you go with us to Thebes.”

King and Princess spoke quietly in their own language. Moses could tell by her agitated gestures and tone of voice she was not pleased with such an agreement, but the king spoke sternly for a moment and she bowed her head in resignation.

“He agrees my Lords,” Tharbis said. “He asks that his soldiers be allowed to return home to their farms.”

“Agreed, Majesty,” Akil said. “Before we go, you will crown your daughter Queen of all Punt in front of your soldiers and your subjects in Aksum. You, Princess Tharbis, must swear before your gods that you will rule peacefully and lead no insurrections against Pharaoh Hatshepsut.”

Tharbis shuffled her feet a little, hesitant to swear such an oath.

Moses said, “Very well, Captain Ahmes. Prepare the executions of the king’s soldiers in the morning.”

“No, wait,” Tharbis said. She stood beside her father. “I swear before the gods of Aksum that I will rule peacefully and will not allow any insurrections against the people of Egypt.”

“Good,” Akil said. “In the morning we will celebrate your coronation, my Lady.” The general turned and left her and her father.

Moses said, “And there has never been a more beautiful queen, your Highness.”

“If I didn’t hate you so much, Moses, I would ask you to rule with me.”

“Highness, I love my Pharaoh and mother too much to treat her so,” he said. He bowed politely and walked away.
