Chapter 11

Preparations Are Complete

Velnir, Arlen, and Magris arrived at the port town, where Baefric and Meric had been overseeing the construction of the ships Velnir needed to take his army across the great sea and into the Araban sundered lands. Meric was waiting for them as they arrived. His hand shielded the sun from his eyes as he watched them come in for a landing.

“Well, hello there, Cousin. I assume you have completed your quest?” Meric said cheerfully.

Arlen and Magris knew nothing about the quest and looked at each other questioningly.

“I have indeed, Meric, and with me, I bring back Illuminar.” He pulled his sword from its sheath and showed it to his cousin. The enchantment had worn off by this time. “It is a sword, Velnir?” He walked over to Velnir with a confused expression and attempted to grab the sword for further inspection.

“It was enchanted by the wizard, and I’m not completely aware of how it works, but I know how to use it. It is known as Illuminar.” Velnir turned his attention from his cousin to his blade, “It will win us the war. I am certain of it.”

“You went all that way to obtain a sword from a wizard, Velnir? A sword?” Meric said with disappointment in his voice. “You are a brilliant tactician and sword master, Velnir, but you will need a miracle if you wish to defeat the orcs in the sundered lands. A sword… haha.” He laughed and walked away to speak with Baefric, who was just arriving to greet his nephew. It was clear Meric was disappointed in Velnir and was filling his uncle in on Velnir’s quest. Baefric’s expression was anything but disappointing. He looked elated.

“You obtained an enchanted weapon from the wizard, Velnir? How did you manage that?”

Meric was shaking his head.

“Velnir, you did it. Your father would be proud,” he said joyfully. “Let’s see it, come on now, show me!” he demanded excitedly.

Velnir obliged and held it up, but like his cousin before, Baefric went to take it from him for further inspection. “The magic that this sword has is unlike anything I have witnessed before.” Baefric returned Illuminar to Velnir. “The wizard really came through. What does it do exactly, though?”

“If I point it at something, it will manifest a concentrated stream or beam of fire and hurl it toward whatever I am pointing it at. If I plunge it into the ground, a massive wave of fire is said to erupt from the blade and go outward.”

“Do you know how to activate the magic?”

“I use willpower.” Velnir wasn’t sure if any of this was actually true. The more he spoke about it, the more foolish he began to feel. He never bothered testing it out.

“What did he ask in return?”

“I will give him the Scepter of Canar once we defeat the orcs.” In truth, he had no intention of giving Alzar the scepter.

“You agreed to give him the Scepter of Canar in exchange for an enchanted sword?
