Chapter Eighteen

Sorcha

“Won’t you ride upon Galileo with me, Miss Darrow?”

“Won’t you give the poor creature a break and walk on your own two feet, instead?”

Sorcha didn’t expect Murdoch to actually get off his horse – much less in response to such an obvious jibe – but he did. He tucked Galileo’s reins beneath the saddle and patted the animal’s flank gently to let him know he could wander free for a while. Galileo subsequently trotted on far ahead, pausing to chew on several mouthfuls of grass until both Murdoch and Sorcha caught up with him once more.

“Are you happy now?” Murdoch asked as they walked along the stony shore. “Walking on my own two –”

The rest of his sentence was lost to a yell as the man tripped and just barely avoided crashing to the ground. Sorcha barked out a laugh before she could stop herself. “Have you perhaps grown too accustomed to carriages and horses from your time in London, Mr Buchanan?” she teased. “Clearly you need to spend more time using your own legs.”

Murdoch ran both of his hands through his dark, curly hair whilst he regained his composure. He threw Sorcha a sly smile that she didn’t entirely understand. “Clearly indeed,” he said, before striding on ahead so quickly that Sorcha had to jog to try and keep up.

“Now you are being unfair!”

“You were the one who insisted I walk,” he called out over his shoulder, the words accompanied by a radiant, wicked grin that could easily have rivalled Lachlan’s.

Do not think about him. He is gone.

“Why are you in such a rush?” Sorcha asked when she finally reached Murdoch’s side.

He raised an eyebrow at Sorcha as though the answer was obvious. “We need to find somewhere to stay the night, of course. There should be a small settlement less than a mile away, if I remember your father’s maps correctly.”

Sorcha looked out across the loch; the sun was low on the horizon, reflecting off the water with a dazzling brightness that she could have watched, entranced, for the rest of her life. “I would rather camp,” she uttered, thinking of the kelpie. “I do not want to stay with other people right now.”

When she looked at Murdoch his expression was coloured by incredulity; Sorcha fully expected him to put his foot down and march her to the closest hamlet regardless of her wishes. It was therefore to her surprise when he said, “I suppose there's no harm in camping. The weather is fair and you are clearly rather adept at it. Do you have a location in mind?”

Sorcha blinked several times before answering. “Are you...serious?”

“Only if you are. Would you like me to collect some firewood whilst you pitch the tent wherever it is you'd like to put it?”

Sorcha nodded numbly in response, wrapping her hand around Galileo's reins to pull him along with her until they found a promising stretch of grass. It was closer to the forest than it was the loch, though Sorcha could still see the water, so she was satisfied with the placement for her tent.
