53 All Roads Lead to Roma

This historic site at beautiful Brudenell pays tribute to the bittersweet legacy of French entrepreneur Jean Pierre Roma. It was in 1732 that Roma brought settlers to PEI, then called Isle St. Jean, to help him seek his fortune from the virgin forests in the eastern part of the Island.

Everything went extremely well for thirteen years, and the community at Trois Rivière prospered. Jean Pierre Roma’s vision of creating a trading empire seemed close to realization. But it all came to an abrupt end in 1745, when the settlement was raided and destroyed by privateers from New England. Roma and his family survived but were forced to flee to Quebec City.

Don’t let the unhappy ending bum you out. Roma had a zest for life and the activities offered at the park will give you a taste—literally—of the one he lived on PEI. Enjoy a heritage lunch comprised of meats, fish, and veggies that Roma and his settlers would have eaten. Bake bread in a wood fire oven, join in on a French musical celebration, dress up in period costume, and try your hand at old-fashioned children’s games. You can also take a guided tour of the period-style buildings and walk the heritage trails between the Brudenell and Montague Rivers. His settlement may have been destroyed but his spirit lives on in this superb natural area.
