“I’m a mess, Autumn, I’m so sorry,” I muttered.

“You’ve had a rough re-introduction to your hometown, you can be forgiven for not knowing which way is up,” she smiled. I felt even worse about thinking she was a murderer because she was being so kind about it.

“I have to go, I’ve got stuff to take care of,” I said.

“Will you be at Rachel’s funeral tomorrow? The poor girl deserves a few friendly faces around her, I assume you have been conversing with her,” she said, almost in a whisper.

I was surprised it was happening so soon. I wasn’t sure how to feel about it; as she was still able to hang out with me it didn’t feel like she was really gone.

“Yeah,” I smiled. “It’s weird.”

“Plenty of weird around here, you’ll get used to it.”

I walked out of the bakery and the little bell rang as I pulled open the door. Rachel began to walk away from the building, and I followed her in silence in case anyone saw me talking and thought I had lost my mind. She walked across the parking lot at the back and down a gravel covered hill that merged into the shore of the lake. She was guiding me to where she had died.

“Have you figured out what happened to me yet?” she asked.

“No, I have so many questions to ask you first,” I began. She sat down on the shore and was staring over at the crime scene tape that was blocking off an area to our left. I sat down next to her and gave her a minute to grieve for herself. “I’m so sorry this happened to you,” I said finally.

“It’s been a few days now, but each moment there is a new wave of memory about it and I feel astonished that I have left my old life behind. Nothing is the same now. I have sat with Dax in our house and watched him cry, I wish he had the sight like you do. I can’t bring him any comfort.”

“If we find out who did this to you then I think that will help ease the pain,” I explained. “We used to love solving mysteries in high school.”

“Yeah but that was always like, ‘Who has been putting graffiti up on the outside of the gym’ or ‘Why are the drama teacher and math teacher arriving in the same car today’?” she laughed. “We only ever really had one proper mystery and we never solved it.”

“Huh?” I turned to her; my brows knitted.

“Angelica Burton. Don’t you remember? How on earth could you forget that?”

“Rachel, I have no idea what you are talking abou—"

It all hit me at once and I couldn’t believe that I had forgotten it either. I started to see everything in my mind as vividly as I had at the time. It had haunted me for so long that I must have pushed it out of my brain completely, but the sound of her name brought it back.
