I spent the rest of the morning and part of the afternoon identifying who managed each product team and reaching out to them individually to get time on their calendars. I was glad Cheryl gave us until Tuesday before our rough drafts were due because I learned quickly that their time was limited. It took some finagling, but I managed to grab an hour tomorrow with the exercise science team, two on Friday, and last but not least, the CBD team Monday morning. That didn’t leave me with much time to get my presentation together, but I figured it would have to do.

At 2:30 p.m., I got an alert that the CBD meeting started at three, so I decided to head down for coffee.

I swung by Delaney’s office to see if she wanted to go with me, but she wasn’t there, so I quickly moved on, not wanting to catch Wayne’s attention and risk him accompanying me. As it was, he seemed to be lurking every time I emerged from my office. Once, he even followed me to the restroom, talking the entire time like it was a normal activity. I was merely grateful he hadn’t followed me inside, although I was worried for a second that he might.

Since six flights of stairs seemed a bit of overkill right before a meeting, the elevator was my only way down, so there was still a chance I’d encounter him along the way, but I’d have to risk it since I needed caffeine in a bad way. With my fingers crossed, I made my way to the coffee shop in the atrium and stood in line with everyone else looking for their three o’clock pick-me-up. I watched the first few people move through, and I tried to gauge how long it would take. More specifically, whether I should abandon ship to ensure I wasn’t late for the meeting.

I waffled back and forth but finally decided the caffeine was necessary to make it through the next couple of hours. I’d learned that meetings tended to make me groggy, and since my calendar seemed to be filling up with them, I had to resort to drastic measures.

When it dwindled to only one person in front of me before it was my turn, a man stepped in front of us. He didn’t say excuse me or anything; he merely moved to the counter and told the barista he’d take his usual, whatever that was.

I waited for the woman in front of me to speak up and call him out for cutting the line. She didn’t, and when I peeked around her, I noticed she was on the phone, a set of AirPods sticking out of her ears.

Usually, I could let things like this slide, but there were at least eight people behind me, and this guy’s disrespect for others was abhorrent. At the very least, he deserved to be called out.

“Excuse me?” I said, prepared to tell him he had to wait with everyone else. “I’m not sure how but I don’t think you noticed the line.
