Chapter Nineteen
Feeling good I’d made it back to the monastery grounds without another island misadventure, I glanced up at the starless sky. Thunder rumbled over the bay, and Sierra called as I opened the door of my bungalow.
“Oh Wyatt, Landry has such dreamy eyes. I think I’m in love.”
“Then I guess you made it home okay.”
“Ten minutes after we left you at the berm bridge. I woke Professor Quinn and told him about the celebration in Landry’s village tomorrow.”
“Bet that was a trip. What did he say?”
“He thinks it’s a wonderful idea and wants to go. He said it was the chance of a lifetime to study a group of people that have hardly changed in nearly two centuries.”
“Wow, I’d never have thought of it like that.”
“Me either. We’re going, sometime after lunch tomorrow. You’re coming with us, aren’t you?”
“Can’t make it that early. I have a few things to do first.”
“What time then?”
“How about seven?”
“Kind of late but we’ll make it work. Landry and I will meet you at the berm bridge.”
When I finally stepped inside the bungalow, Kisses bounded toward me. I’d left the patio door ajar for her, and I knew she had plenty of food and water. I still felt guilty, being gone so long and leaving her alone in a strange place. The way she was rubbing against my leg, I realized she’d missed me too, and all was forgiven.
. . .
Kisses awoke me early the next morning, pawing my chest to make sure I didn’t ignore her. After feeding and paying attention to her for a requisite amount of time, I was ready to look into a few things that still bothered me about the case. Satiated for the moment by my attention, Kisses didn’t seem to mind when I left the bungalow.
Lilly Bliss and Stormie were the only two women on the island when the killing occurred. According to Tony’s report, one of them had likely been skinny dipping with Rance Parker shortly before it had happened. I’d talked with Stormie already, but not Lilly Bliss. I hoped she could give me some answers.
Stormie was strange, but neither she nor Lilly Bliss struck me as killers. Both seemed deeply into kinky sexual experiences, as least from what Stormie had told me. I set out to talk with Miss Bliss and find out what she knew, if anything, about the killing.
She wasn’t at the pool or in any of the restaurants. No one had seen her that morning. A gardener pointed me to her bungalow as a flock of geese circled overhead.
“Come in. I’m not getting up,” she said when I knocked on her door.
I opened it to see the woman sitting behind a laptop computer, the air conditioning blasting. Dressed in green flannel pajamas, she looked more suited for a winter night in Maine than a late spring morning in south Louisiana. When she glanced up from her keyboard, I got my first close look at her.
Her hair was short and black, the same color as the frames of the thick glasses she’d pushed to the top of her head like a tiara.
