Her senses were on high alert expecting trouble.

Staring at the barn, Steph lowered the binoculars and turned away from the window. All was well. She was beginning to think that maybe she was a little hard on him — what with the comment about slicing off his nether regions if he came near her girls. Since his arrival, she’d had her guard up but for good reason. Trusting men had only gotten harder after the incident with Rooster and Bernard. But that came with the territory of being a single woman. Before the event, Eden Falls was a place where most residents felt like they could leave their doors unlocked. People knew each other, watched out for one another. Not anymore. The community had taken a nosedive into hell and wasn’t coming back.

Still, Caleb seemed to be following her guidelines. She preferred to call them that as the word “rules” got a reaction out of city escapees. They’d spent years living under rules. No, she wouldn’t keep him in the barn forever. She was pretty good at sizing people up, given enough time. Okay, barring Rooster but that was before the world entered chaosville. Once she’d spent some time with Caleb, gotten a sense for who he was, what he was hoping for now that he was out, things might be different.

“You don’t trust him around us, do you?” Pearl asked, leaning against the doorway. She pushed back a strand of blonde hair behind her ear.

“I have my reasons.”

“Those men, right?”

She nodded, crossing the room and heading out into the hallway, taking some fresh towels to replace the old ones in the bathroom. “What was it like?”

“What was what like?”

“Killing someone.”

“I hope you never know,” Steph replied, setting the towels down. Even though she said that realistically she knew that the odds were she’d have to kill someone one day. Being a woman in a world without law carried its own set of challenges. She’d risen to the occasion multiple times but had come so close to dying.

“The boy, Lucas. Do you miss him?”

“Every day. I owe that kid my life.”

“Do you think he’s killed since?”

Steph was getting some homemade soap out of a closet when she stopped and looked at her. “Okay, what is today’s fascination with killing?”

“Just curious.”

“Has Blair been speaking to you?”

A smirk danced on Pearl.

Steph groaned. Because of all that happened to Blair in the city, it was worrying. It had damaged her but to what extent? It also made her wonder about Lucas. Under normal circumstances, he would have been put through therapy after witnessing what he had, but with that gone, and after hearing some of the horror stories coming out of the city, it wasn’t encouraging. She trusted her brother and knew that he would do everything in his power to keep them safe, but she hadn’t heard from him since he’d left town. “Look, listen less to Blair and focus on the good things. You’re out now. You’re safe. No one is going to harm you here.
