January felt endless to Liza—a long, dull, dark month, where all she did was go to work and go home again. The dubious highlight was a visit from Lindsay in the middle of the month; she insisted on them all going out, this time to a nightclub in Islington. Liza didn’t think she could have been less in the mood for such a thing, but for Lindsay’s sake she went. She was hardly likely to run into Fausto Danti at a place like that, and she didn’t.

By mid-February her employer began to show concern. ‘You seem to have lost your sparkle,’ Henry commented wryly as he signed some letters and handed them to her for mailing. ‘Although admittedly it’s difficult for anyone to retain good humour at such a dull time of year.’

Liza managed a rather wan smile. ‘I’m all right,’ she said. She had been dragging, but she was reluctant to admit it. Henry gave her a small encouraging smile that suggested he didn’t believe her but was too polite to say so.

A few days later, however, he did say something. ‘Sometimes it takes a new perspective,’ he announced.

‘What does?’ she asked a bit warily.

‘To regain one’s sparkle. I’m planning to go to my cottage in Norfolk this weekend. My grand-niece is joining me with her family. Why don’t you come too?’

It was the last thing Liza had expected ‘Oh...’

‘The weather is meant to be good, if a bit bracing, and I promise you the walks on the beach are quite restorative. It won’t be fancy—whatever kitchen suppers we can throw together, and most likely fish fingers and chips for the little ones.’ He pretended to shudder but he was smiling.

Liza was on the cusp of saying no out of habit more than anything else when she remembered that Jenna was going back to Hereford for the weekend to visit some school friends. Why shouldn’t she get out of the city, see something different?

For a second she wondered if Fausto might be there, but Henry would surely have mentioned it if he was. Besides, he might be back in Italy by now. He probably was—a prospect that did not make her feel sorry in the least. Or so she insisted on telling herself more than once.

‘All right, then,’ she told Henry, injecting as much cheer into her voice as she could. ‘That’s very kind of you. Thank you.’

Three days later she was taking the train to King’s Lynn, and then the bus to Hunstanton, where Henry’s cottage was located. He’d decamped there the day before, but Liza had chosen to come on Friday afternoon, so as not to take up all of Henry’s time with his family.

‘It’s so good to see you,’ Henry said warmly when he picked her up from the station, as if he hadn’t seen her yesterday at the office.

It was a short ride through the falling dusk out of Hunstanton to his ‘cottage’, which Liza quickly discovered wasn’t a cottage at all, but an eight-bedroom manor house with a garden rolling down to a private beach.
